Problem Accessing Admin Console of Remote Installation

I have two installations (home & cottage) and up until a few minutes ago I was able to log into the cottage ISY, from my home computer, and then startup the Admin Console. However now when I try, I can still log into the remote ISY but when I try to open the Admin Console I get the message that "Your Java version is out of date."

 

I had already updated my Java version on my home computer to version 8 Update 51 just prior to this problem starting! This is the same version that the message is suggesting that I should update my computer with! I have also confirmed that my computer is in fact running this version of Java!

 

Any thoughts?

Did you delete any older versions. Java has a tool that will do that.

I am on an iMac running Yosemite. As I understand it the older versions issue is a Windows issue.

 

However, I did delete Java from the iMac and then I reinstalled it. I am no longer getting the error saying that Java is out of date... but I am still not able to get to the Admin Console! After I click on the Admin Console button a browser page opens which shows the Universal Devices logo and the message "Please Keep This Windows Open!". Normally I see the Java logo below and the progress of it loading before the Admin Console opens. However, now instead of the Java logo I am getting a box with "Error. Click for details". When I click I get another box:

 

Application Error 

 

ClassNotFoundException

 

com.univeraldevices.client.ui.UDClientApplet.class

I believe that was normally seen in the Chrome browser as they *Google* disabled Java support. Which can be enabled again until complete support for Java is withdrawn.

 

You can simply use the other Java application launcher which does not rely on the browser to be launched.

What do you mean by this? Is this the admin.jnlp file? If so how do I set this up for a remote ISY connection? Whenever I run the file it opens up my local ISY Admin Console!

If you select the correct link for the Beta you're using once you download and open the file it will place a icon called ISY994 Administrative Console.

 

Selecting this icon will launch the ISY Finder . . .

 

You will simply enter the Public IP / Local IP of your choice and it will launch the Admin Console for you.

The remote ISY is not on a Beta. It is currently on version 4.2.18. My local ISY is on version 4.3.1. Am I supposed to be using different ISY Finder applets for these two versions?

 

The ISY Admin Console icon opens up the ISY Finder and my local ISY Admin Console. When I go to the actual ISY Finder and try to add in my remote ISY's DDNS address https://mycottage.ddns.net:443(not my real address!) or the actual address (https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:443) I get a series of errors as follows:

 

XML Parse Error https://address/desc

 

Socket Open Failed javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException:Remote host closed connection during handshake
 
Not Found
 

However I am able to add the same addresses using http://! Any ideas on why the https:// addresses are not recognized? I am still able to log into the remote ISY using the https:// addresses when I go the browser route!

 

With respect to the ISY Finder... how do I actually launch the remote Admin Console once I have an address added? The Admin Console for my local ISY is  automatically launched when I click on the Admin Console icon on my desktop but I haven't figured out how to launch the remote ISY's Admin Console from the ISY Finder (even using the http:// addresses)!

I believe the issue you're seeing is a certificate issue. Because SSL was dropped due to a vulnerability with the Poodle hack.

 

You can read about this and what to do in the release notes published by UDI.

 

In the interim to access the cottage unit in the finder. Simply double tap the IP address in the finder this will launch the admin console.

 

Upon gaining access you need to upgrade that unit so the correct TLS encryption will be supported moving forward.

I believe the next step and best option moving forward is to submit a ticket so UDI Support can resolve this quickly for you. You may submit a service request following this resource link: http://www.universal-devices.com/contact-support/

 

Once they assist you to gain portal access you will need to update that controller to the latest Beta build which is 4.3.10 RC5. This will allow you to have better support for devices and speeds up encryption processing for higher levels of certificate strengths.

Before I submit a ticket to support I thought that I should look into the Certificates issue, which I have ignored up until now, on both my ISY installations. I followed the WiKi instructions as I understand them and now I think I have Self Signed Certificates on both machines... 

 

Interestingly opening the Dashboard file (dashboard.jnlp... note that for some reason when I first ran this file I received a message that it was unable to create a desktop icon!) brings up the ISY Finder. Now when I click on the http:// addresses, that I previously added, I am able to get into the remote ISY's Dashboard!

 

A few questions on the Certificate instructions...

 

 - The WiKI shows the HTTPS Server Settings as TLS 1.2 with a low strength and the HTTPS Client Settings as TLS 1.0 with a high strength... are these the recommended settings or simply examples? If they aren't the recommended settings what is recommended?

 

- Am I correct that when setting up the SSL Certificate that I should use my local IP address as the Host Name and then fill everything else in as the example shows (Org = UDI; Org Unit = ISY; Locality = Encino; State = CA; Country = US; and Key Strength = 2048)? And do I do exactly the same for both the Server and Client?

 

- Do I also have to create a SSL Certificate for my DDNS / WAN IP address? I doubt it but I am trying to cover all bases...

 

Two questions related to using the Dashboard on the remote ISY... can I upgrade that ISY's Firmware remotely? why does that ISY give me a message saying that version 4.2.30 is available instead of 4.3.1? Can I go straight from 4.2.18 to 4.3.1?

 

I also realized something else going through this exercise... I now no longer have the ISY Admin Console icon on my desktop! I received a similar message to the Dashboard one where it said that it could not create the icon on my desktop (and actually deleted it!)! So now I have to bring up the ISY Finder by clicking on the file admin.jnlp. The good news is that when I do this my local Admin Console no longer opens automatically and I am presented with the ISY Finder box only. Now when I double click on the remote ISY's http:// address I am able to log into the Admin Console. It appears that once ISY Finder opens an Admin Console it has to be closed before it can open another one... so earlier when my local Admin Console was automatically opened  ISY Finder could not open any other instance!

 

Now when I try to add the https:// address for the remote ISY into ISY Finder I only get the 'Not Found' error message. I presume that the SSL Certificate set up has reduced the errors. Am I correct in presuming that I should be able to use the https:// address within ISY Finder?

The system will indicate the official release that is available for install and never a Beta version. You may install the latest 4.3.10 RC5 build with out issue or worry and this will provide new Insteon hardware support and resolve many past bugs.

 

Every time (Now) you install the new Admin Console it will delete the older version from the desktop. You can simply create a new desktop icon which should have been done automatically or placed somewhere else on your Mac.

 

With respect to the certificate and its setting up this would be best done with the assistance of UDI Support.

 

NOTE: Please follow all guidelines with respect to the updating process for firmware. Failure to do so will result in random errors or access issues.
