Network Bridges and the ISY

I tried triggers back in the day when I had the ISY hard cabled to the router and the email notifications worked just fine. Unfortunately the Insteon network reliability wasn't so great there and I used a linksys wireless bridge to relocate it to a place next to the access points.

Since I did that I lost the email notifications. I'm baffled as the bridge doesn't appear to be and shouldn't be blocking any ports. Has anyone else used a bridge on their ISY and noticed email notification problems?

jbev,

Hello. This makes sense IF AND ONLY IF your linksys wireless bridge is also a DHCP server and, as such, it gives ISY an unknows DNS address (and therefore ISY cannot communicate with the outside world). Would you be kind enough to let me know if ISY is getting its IP from your bridge or from your router?

Thanks and with kind regards,

Michel

Hmm...

When I had the ISY hardwired I was using a static IP address so I could forward a port to it. As a result DHCP was turned off on the LAN ports of the router. For the wireless I always left DHCP on and just enabled security since I don't care what IP the laptops had.

I remember testing the bridge with my PC to make sure it worked prior to attaching the ISY to it. Perhaps the ISY can't deal as well with the current settings as my PC can. DNS makes sense though... must investigate.

jbev,

Please do be kind enough to let me know of the outcome of your investigation. I'd sincerely appreciate it.

I messed with the settings all day today and I can't get notifications to work with the bridge. I tried doing a factory reset on the ISY thinking that would wipe out the network settings only to discover that I deleted my backup file after the upgrade. To make matters worse, a "factory reset" does not in fact reset the network information... I'm just giving up on using notificatiosn since I now have bigger problems.

After todays experiments I have a Lamplinc that will only do fast on and offs. I have the scenes with 19sec ramp rates and that nas no effect on it. Nor does using the ISY controls in the admin console. I messed something up somewhere... just can't figure out why it won't ramp on when the ISY is telling me it has a 47sec ramp rate... restore device does not work on it and I can never get a restore all devices to complete without an error.

Some day I will just learn to leave things alone.

jbev,

This is horrible. You do not have any backups? Anywhere?

How did you get your devices back into ISY? Did you do a crawl? If you haven't yet, and if you have a relatively small installation, may I suggest a crawl?

Is there anything I can do to help?

With kind regards,

Michel
