deirwin Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Is there a big issue with Insteon keypads. I have 6 installed in my house right now. 1 makes a clicking noise (and doesn't appear to communicate), one seems dead, another makes a beeping noise (and doesn't appear to communicate), and i have 3 more in a box that did the same. So, 6 out of 9 - seems like a very high percentage. Is anybody else having same experience or know a way to resolve the clicking or beeping? Hopefully it's just me, but maybe there's a bigger issue? FYI, we also have 6 defective dimmers/switches, but we have 70 or so that are working, so under 10%.

I've had that problem with several of mine, out of 5. There is a problem with some of them, usually associated with a particular manufacturing year. My defective ones were from the 2011-2012 time frame. I believe I've seen posts that they can be repaired if you are electronically inclined. I did not take that route, I replaced them. Factory resetting them sometimes helps for a while, but eventually the ones with those symptoms go bad. How old are they, you might be under warranty? Even if you're not, I would call that story in to SmartHome, if you bought them there. I've had luck by stating my case nicely but assertively. I can't hurt to try. Also, I would consider a whole house power conditioner on your panel if you don't have one. It reduces overvoltages and spikes that can harm insteon devices and other electronics. Teken Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Speaking from personal experience there is a model year that when power is applied the KPL will cycle and flicker the LED buttons and it will also flicker the attached load. These are just issues related to that early production year and newer units offer better PSU and wider supported voltages. They also incorporate much higher surge resistance in the design of the hardware. A Smarthome representative has also taken the time to respond to a customers review in the Smarthome website affirming the same. Like Paul I would inquire if there is anything they can do if these devices are out of warranty. I've seen them offer a larger discount for next purchases and given the 20% sale is on now you just might get a little extra? Asking is free and you never know who you may get on the other side of the line that may understand the huge investment you have made etc. Keep us all in the loop . . .
stephan Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Hi guys, I have the same problem now with KPL from that time frame. What I was wondering is whether I can still use them - without flickering - if I don't control any load. I could use them to remote control other parts of the house for instance. -Stephan
stusviews Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 KeypadLinc On/Off switches do click, dimmers don't. You didn't specify which ones click. You did indicate that you have both.
