"Z-Wave dongle not responding" on my ISY994i ZW/IR PRO Z-Wave

Featured Replies

Is my new ISY994i ZW/IR PRO malfunctioning or am I missing something?

I'm old hat to smarthoming, having been an X10 user since the '70s.  Having recently moved into a new home, I figured it was time to start over from scratch with newer technology and settled on Z-Wave as the basis.  I just acquired a ISY994i ZW/IR PRO Z-Wave as the building block.

I installed it on my network and was able to access it via the Java app.  The instructions explicitly say that the first thing you need to do is do a factory reset on the Z-Wave dongle, which I assume is built-in.  However, in the Java app under "Z-Wave", it only says "Z-Wave dongle not responding" and "Upgrade Z-Wave Firmware".

The write-up on the ISY994i ZW/IR PRO implies that it's Z-Wave ready out-of-the-box, as opposed to requiring an external dongle as one would need to interface a X10 or Insteon network.  An extra Cat-5 cable is included for a dongle, but no other hardware was provided.  So I'm assuming that the Z-Wave "dongle" is built-in.

So am I literally missing an external dongle, or is this just malfunctioning?  Had really hoped to be programming this over the weekend.

What does Hep | About show for Firmware and UI levels?   Is there a PLM connected to ISY?

The ZWave dongle is internal to ISY.

There is a version of ISY Firmware that runs without a PLM but not sure that firmware is preloaded.

Have you seen a Safe Mode message?

There is no external dongle. The Z-Wave module is an internal plug-in device. Select Z-Wave > Advanced > Z-Wave Version. What is listed?

The only tabs that do anything are "File" and "Z-Wave", so I can't even see a version #.  There are no external devices attached.

Problem diagnosed:  Turns out that the problem was with a firewall that is blocking some communication between my computer and the device.  When the device is on the same subnet as my computer, it appears to function properly.  The ISY994 Z-Wave module must be using ports other than 80 to unexpectedly talk back to the Java app.  Will have to check some logs and program some pathways if I plan on segregating this device as I do others.

Thank you all for the quick responses.

John.

Hi John,

Thanks so very much for the update. What you experienced is not isolated to Z-Wave only; it's an overall system since events must be able to be pushed to the Admin Console from ISY. It seems your firewall was blocking this communication. More information on firewalls:
