Random incorrect status

I am having issues with my setup that I can't pinpoint. I have an ISY 994i Pro with an Insteon PLM. My ISY is randomly showing the incorrect status of my Insteon devices. Here are a few examples,

 

Dining room light (dimmer switch) was on but ISY showed it as off.

Christmas lights (outdoor module) sometimes don't turn on or off based on the program I set up.

Garage status (garagelinc package) will show correct status when door opens but not always show close when the door is closed.

Waterfall control (outdoor module) will randomly show a failure to connect to device but upon doing a query the ISY sees it no problem.

Fanlinc showing fan is still on high when it was turned off on a keypadlinc.

 

This issue doesn't happen often. I may see 1-2 of these incorrect statuses in a week. Is this normal? It is annoying when I log in from work and see a status stating the garage door is open when it isn't or when I go to bed and check to see if I left any lights on and it shows the lights are off when in fact a light may be on.

 

 

I use Mobilinc with Mobilinc connect. I can confirm there is nothing wrong with Mobilinc. When I see the incorrect status in Mobilinc, I log into my admin console and see the incorrect status is in the ISY.

 

My insteon PLM died about a month ago and has been replaced with a brand new one. I have restored the PLM twice since receiving it.

 

I have over 20 insteon devices in my home and most are dual band.

 

The status problem is not limited to one insteon device. 

 

Is it normal to have these incorrect status issues or is something wrong with my setup?

 

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Did you happen to delete the PLM?

 

If you follow the replace modem procedure it should get you going again.

This sounds like simply poor communications on the Insteon network and is not that uncommon.  This can happen if you have noisy power supplies/electronics on the line or devices with noise filters built in that actually absorb the Insteon signals as though they were noise.  It can also be signal propagation problems across the legs of your electrical feed.

 

Best practices state that you should isolate noisy items or signal absorbing items with FilterLincs.  Things like computers, UPS boxes, Noise filtering power strips, many wallwart style power supplies (cell chargers etc) have been shown to interfere with Insteon signaling.  You should also ensure that you have reliably bridged the legs (phases) of your electrical feed with Range extenders or other dual band devices.  Perform the 4 Tap beacon test from several different dual band devices to ensure proper bridging.  Locate the ISY's PLM as close to the service entrance/main panel as possible and preferably on a dedicated circuit not shared with other non-isolated electronics.  The set phase bridging devices would also be best  close to the main panel with additional dualband devices distributed around the premises as needed for good RF coverage.

I did the replace modem procedure twice now.

Thanks for the tips Xathros. I will look into that some more. I have approximately 15 dual band insteon devices on both phases of my electrical feed so I thought I would be good. Can't hurt to buy a few filterlincs and throw them on my powerstrips.

Not all dualband devices perform the same in terms of range.  Those installed in walls and especially those installed in metal jboxes tend to have poor range.  Plug-in modules like the range extenders and LampLinc modules tend to offer better range since they are less obstructed.  Perform the beacon test from your existing dual band devices and if you get consistent results indicating a successful bridge, then move on to isolating problem devices.

 

Identify a consistently problematic device and run multiple scene tests against it.  Then after filtering suspect devices, repeat the scene tests and evaluate the results.  If no or insignificant improvement, then move the filters to other suspect devices until you see marked improvement in the test results.  You can isolate entire circuits at a time by turning off their breakers and testing with them off.  Keep in mind, this might effect your bridging if any of your bridge devices are on the circuit you turn off.

You can post a trace of the Event Viewer and possibly something will give a clue.

 

Open Event Viewer to Level 3(Tool > Diagnostics,) turn on off devices, copy to clipboard (Icon, bottom between Save To... and Close)

Paste it into the code <> field (click on the brackets in the reply toolbar.)

Alright, here is Level 3 Event Viewer. This is the order of devices I manipulated.

 

First I opened Mobilinc and I noticed that open failed line.

Opened and closed a dimmerlinc device (dual band)

Opened and closed a switchlinc device (dual band)

Opened and closed outdoor module (single band)

Opened and closed Garage kit i/o linc (single band)

Keypadlinc to turn on and off fanlinc

 

Let me know if you guys see anything. I have no idea how to read this.

I'm guessing that you have no Integer vars defined thus, no file to be opened, thus the file open failed message.  After a quick review, I see nothing but perfect comms.  Did any of the operations your tried fail during these tests?

That is correct. Only state variables at this time, Integer variables is empty.
