LampLinc - information

I got curious and decided to punch some holes in a LampLinc to let the faint sound "out of the box". At the risk of letting the magic smoke out too I was curious to see how these things are constructed inside.

Here is the case cracked open

Note the small sounder is glued into the case front and has short wires. It has to be split open front cover to guts but snaps back together after.

After removing the heatsink to expose more PCB details.

This can be a PITA to get back on as they have used a lock and nut underneath where it isn't reachable. Some gentle bending of triac leads had to be performed.

Here is the PCB from the left, and right views.

After drilling a few "vents holes" to let the small piezo sound out the front looked like this. Yeah should have not done this in the air but they are small enough to keep bugs out and fingers out.

Was it worth it?

Now I can hear the sound from about 10 feet away in a very quiet room. If there was music playing in that or the next room, wouldn't even notice it.

Conclusion: Waste of my time. Hope it was good for you! :)

Thanks for the photos.

May help others who have not seen the internal photos in the FCC Database.

In the stripped 2457D2 chassis. Used for the Alarm Module. They left the larger sounders leads much longer and loosely coiled inside the front case.

The stripped 2457D2 chassis. Used in the Range Extender also has the short leaded small sounder.

I'm sorry if I over looked what the intent was to drill holes into something that makes no consistent noise like the Alert Module?!?

Besides something to do?

Did I  miss the obvious here my friend.

Nahhh. Just adding to the general knowledge base here while I was experimenting. I keep hearing about getting human attention with these module mosquitos sounds. I have about 40 different units now and none of them make a loud enough sound to be useful.

This is something Insteon is missing big time.

Go big or go home SH. I want a sounder that can produce 255 different pleasant bell, piano tunes, chimes, "hello!",  sounds by sending it an analogue value with a 2.5" , or better speaker. :)

Geezzzz. even the app for the CAO Tags tells you with a voice that one has moved by the name you gave it. Maybe an old mobile phone would do it? I have about 20 of them rotting in cupboards now. :)

Good idea. Thanks for the post. A bit of speaker grill cloth behind the holes wold keep even tiny crawlers out.

I used a 5/64" bit.  Usually 1/8" keeps bugs out, by some defs.

I consider it a fail anyway but it was worth a try. I still can't hear the noise unless I am within a few feet and listening for I, unfortunately.

Maybe I should have measured the voltage at the piezo, possibly a sub'ed Sonalert type unit may be handy. It only makes a short blip but they could be handy for testing or indicators like garage door left open where the Buzzlink is too intrusive. Well mine is.

Ants can easily penetrate 5/64", so can fruit flies. You may have neither in your region, but I'll bet there is a local insect that can penetrate your bore.

Not a fail. It's inspired others, I'm sure.

Thanks for the compliment on the BuzzLinc. It's meant to be intrusive, or at least, not ignored.
