pjt588 Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 I have an ISY994i and a variety of insteon equipment - switches, thermostats, leak sensors, smoke detectors, motion sensors, door sensors, etc. I've had no problems for 18 months (new house) and then had some programs that didn't seem to be running. Then two weeks ago I had an all on incident -- first one ever. UDI recommended replacing my PLM since it was under two years old and starting to go bad (errors in the log file). I swapped the new PLM into my system and then did a "delete PLM" and "restore PLM". The first time I did the restore PLM it seemed to work, but none of my programs worked. Now i'm in the middle of trying another "restore PLM" and I've gotten at least 10-15 of "cannot communicate with device" error messages for various devices. I've also tried rebooting the ISY without any luck. I just checked the error log and there is nothing recorded from this latest restore activity. Any ideas? I am really missing all my programs!
jerlands Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 The Delete Modem was a mistake. It removed all PLM links from the ISY. The only way to recover from that is to load last known good backup and reissue "Restore Modem" or to restore every device. The instructions are in the Wiki for replacing PLM. Jon...
hlaiii Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Jon- I have to relate that my experience was pretty much the same as pjt588, and the solution may not be so simple. I had to replace my PLM when it went dead, and I swapped it out for a new one. I did not "Delete Modem", but I did "Restore Modem" as my first action. None of my sensors were working (leak sensors, 2450 IO RelayLinc, etc.), but all of my light switches, Venstar thermostats, etc. continue to work, and continued to be visible and operable in the ISY-994i Administrative Console. The "sensors" were completely disconnected from ISY-994i. Restoring an earlier backup, and attempting to "Restore Modem" again did not help any of this. I have had to delete, and reinstall all my sensors. Since my alarm panel alerts me via a 2450 IO RelayLinc, I have a main water supply valve cutoff (also with a 2450), and my garage lights work with a pair of 2450's, you can imagine my urgency to get these all up and running again. I had to delete each sensor, and each 2450 (both the sensor and relay), and reinstall all of them, ensuring my programs continue to reference the proper devices. So far, so good. The problematic capacitors in the PLMs create more work, beyond simply swapping out the PLM and "Restore Modem" in some instances, it seems. HLA
jerlands Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 I don't fully understand the linking process but my impression is during Restore Modem every linked device is rewritten with the new PLM address, including battery operated devices. The Wiki instructions for Restore Modem do include the method of exclusion for battery operated devices but why the IO RelayLinc failed is puzzling. Jon...

HLA After you do a restore modem you need to restore the battery operated devices, one at a time, by putting them into the linking mode then do a restore device.. The battery operated devices are in a sleep mode in order to conserve batteries and normally don't respond to a restore modem. Only one battery operated device at a time can be in the linking mode so be sure to take it out of linking before linking the next battery operated device. For your IOLinc try a restore device, that will write the links to it unless you have some type of a communications problem. .
hlaiii Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Thanks for the quick reply. While I understand the nuance of getting the battery-powered devices restored back with my system, I would like to indicate that failure of a PLM modems is not simply a "unplug the old, plug in the new, and select restore" process. Using less than optimal (can we conclude substandard?) capacitors in the PLM has really resulted a shortened time to fail, and about 6 hours of trouble shooting, deleting and reinstalling several devices which could not be simply "restored". I still have modules which are not working as originally configured. I haven't cracked open the case of this replacement PLM, but hopefully they selected premium components that are not as likely to fail like these older PLMS. Two years for the PLM at a different location that I installed, and 3 years for my installation. I like the technology, but do I really "need" to re-do my entire installation by spending several hours, every time a PLM fails?
Brian H Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 My hardware 2.1 2413S . Still had Fujucon RK series capacitors in the C7 and C13 positions. Just changed from 10uF to 100uF.
pjt588 Posted March 12, 2016 Author Posted March 12, 2016 So given my situation (deleting PLM when replacing it), what is the best way to start over clean? Uplug ISY, Unplug new PLM, Power PLM, Power ISY. Do a restore on ISY from my last backup, then a restore on PLM? I have all kinds of strange things going on - i frequently get "System Busy" on the ISY console and it takes FOREVER (5 mins) to update the dialog 1 percent at a time. Then sometimes it does it again. Ugh.

Remove power from ISY and unplug, unplug PLM, plug new PLM in, plug and power up ISY, Restore ISY from last know good backup, Restore PLM From Wiki To replace a PLM: Unplug ISY from the power outlet Unplug the PLM from ISY and power outlet Connect ISY’s port A to the new PLM Plug the new PLM into a power outlet Plug ISY into a power outlet Go to Admin Console and wait for system initialization to completeIf you have PRO Series, click on the Battery icon at the top. This will prevent ISY from trying to update programming on your RF devices which are probably in sleep mode Click on the Restore Modem (PLM) menu option <<-- Restore ISY then Restore PLM In case ISY cannot communicate (or decides not to if an RF device/PRO Series) during the process, you will have a series of nodes with green 1011 icons in the device tree. For each one of those nodes: If an RF device, ensure that the device is in Programming mode Right mouse click | Write pending updates ... Jon...
pjt588 Posted March 15, 2016 Author Posted March 15, 2016 @jon - I've completed the steps above, except for the battery devices which I will do today. However, during the PLM restore, I got at least a dozen error messages "cannot communicate with device..." I had to click ok and then the restore would continue until another popped up. They were mostly lights, but some other devices too. Did the system retry and i'm ok, or do I have another problem here now and what do I do about it? Should I be looking in the logs somewhere? Thx.
stusviews Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 If there are no 1011 or ! symbols to the left of any device, then you're OK.

You might test your comms by opening Event Viewer to Level 3, activate a couple (problematic) devices then copy trace to clipboard (clipboard icon lower toolbar) and paste into message post. You'll be looking at Hops Left=(x) where 3 or 2 is good and less is poor. Jon...
pjt588 Posted March 15, 2016 Author Posted March 15, 2016 Since this device (Master Bedroom Can Lights) errored out on the PLM restore, I'm trying execute a "restore device" command on it. Earlier today, i didn't even get a "writing to device dialog", nothing happened at all. Just now, it tried to write the restore but failed about halfway through with a "cannot communicate to device" message. Log below...... thx! pjt588 Posted March 15, 2016 Author Posted March 15, 2016 It's a dimmer (2477D) for can lights and it has regular halogen bulbs. My guess is that I could try to restore any one of the 10-15 devices that failed in the PLM restore and have the same exact problem. I'm not sure it is just this device. Does the log show anything else?
pjt588 Posted March 15, 2016 Author Posted March 15, 2016 Here's another example from a different device (2477S) that controls a bathroom fan. Same issue - can't write to device, here's the log: Tue 03/15/2016 05:15:04 PM : [ 2A 61 CC 1] Preparing Device 'Toilet Fan' for RestoreTue 03/15/2016 05:15:04 PM : [ 2A 61 CC 1] Device 'Toilet Fan' jerlands Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 I don't fully understand all the events but you do have comm issues seen by Hops Left=1 or 0 Something else is wrong and I'm wondering if you restored ISY with a good backup and not the backup made after you issued "Delete Modem?" Jon...
pjt588 Posted March 15, 2016 Author Posted March 15, 2016 The ISY backup was from Nov and the modem restore was from February. I can try a different backup prior to November but not sure that will help. Things are definitely cross linked because I turn off a light in the kitchen and my office light goes off. It must be the devices that can't be written to in the PLM restore. I do have two circuit panels but I have both of them phase bridged so my signal should be going everywhere. And before the modem replacement, I was basically fine.
Techman Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 The ISY backup was from Nov and the modem restore was from February. I can try a different backup prior to November but not sure that will help. How many links do you show? You might want to try a factory reset on the PLM then another restore.
pjt588 Posted March 16, 2016 Author Posted March 16, 2016 Update... I did a bunch of PLM link counts and got the following: first count 40. I've seen way more other times, so I repeated the count and got 329. Then I did a factory reset on the PLM and restored it again. This time no errors on the restore! But then I did another PLM count and got 432, then another and got 163, then a third and got 129. What is going on? What should the relationship be between devices and PLM count? I still have issues with cross links - turn off light in one room and it works, but also turns off the light in another room too..... Ideas?
LeeG Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 NO INSTEON activity must reach PLM while Show PLM Links Table is running. The link counts will be wrong (too high or too low) if the PLM receives or sends messages other than those associated with the Show command. EDIT: the change in Count from Show to Show function does NOT indicate an issue with the PLM links. The Get Next command used to read next link record is adversely affected by other Insteon activity. The PLM has worked this way for all the years (more than 10) I have been using PLMs.
LeeG Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 "I still have issues with cross links - turn off light in one room and it works, but also turns off the light in another room too....." That is a link problem or a Program is operating the "other" device . The device that is reacting when it should not could have a link for the Scene initiated when the first device is operated. Do a Show Device Links Table on the second device. Look for a Responder link with the first device address.
GuitarBuilder Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 My PLM finally died as well and I had to replace it. I followed the instructions and it appears to be working. However, my devices only respond to the on/off controls in the Admin Console or on the Mini Remote. My programs are running fine, but commands to devices appear to be lost. Device status is reported incorrectly sometimes as well (sometimes correctly). Mobilinc is not able to control any devices or report their status correctly. I've repeated the shutdown/boot-up process for both PLM and ISY and restored the PLM several times. No luck! Any suggestions on how to get my system back on line? Thanks!
LeeG Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Can you describe the actual steps taken when replacing PLM. The power down, power up sequence, commands issued are critical in replacing PLM. "but commands to devices appear to be lost." Are the Program issued commands turning Scenes On/Off or Direct device commands?
GuitarBuilder Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 1. Powered down ISY 2. Unplugged old PLM, plugged in new PLM 3. Powered up ISY and waited for 5-10 minutes 4. Did File>Restore PLM I also tried File>Restore Devices Some programs issue direct device commands; others turn a scene on/off. On further testing it would appear that the scenes are not working.
