Had to replace a Keypad Linc but....

I had an older KPL go bad so I ordered a replacement from SmartHome. I have an older ISY (Firmware Version 3.3.10). When I attempt to link the new KPL (Version Rev. 7.7) it won't link the "A, B, C or D" buttons. They don't appear in the ISY console. The KPL actually appears as a Switchlinc!

Do I have a new defective KPL or is my ISY too old to work with this latest version?

Thanks,

Mike

Many new Insteon devices don't have an entry into the way, way old.3.3.10 Firmware. There is no list. A solution is to upgrade the ISY to a 994i at the lower cost upgrade price.

Or, of course, you could search around (eBay?  "Coffee Shop" area of this forum?) to see if anyone has a KPL that has the same part number and about the same version as the failed one.  Don't worry about the color; it's really easy to swap the entire faceplate with the buttons.

Does Firmware Version 3.3.10 necessarily indicate he is not using an ISY994 ?

I am using an ISY that is about 6 or 7 years old. I believe it is an ISY99 I've had no issues with the ISY whatsoever until I tried to add this new KPL.

Does that indicate what model you have somehow?

I have only had an ISY994 for about 2+ year now and never saw any other models.

Yes, Firmware 3.3.10 was the last version available for the ISY 99i.

Yeah, the model is ISY 99. It's a really old model. It's just in a metal box you used to be able to get at Radio Shack! It is not the fancy box like the ISY 994. What I'm really trying to figure out is if I have a defective KPL or my ISY 99 is outdated and won't work with the new KPL. They stopped supporting and updating the firmware for the ISY 99 in February of 2013.

In other words: yes, the ISY-99 is too old, it doesn't support newer Insteon keypads, and it is no longer being updated to support other new Insteon hardware. Universal Devices offers a discounted upgrade for owners of older ISY devices. See the Upgrade section on this page: https://www.universal-devices.com/sales/

Its pretty much a good bet the problem you're seeing is because the 99 Series Controllers 3.3.10 firmware does not support the latest Insteon hardware.

I would suggest you move forward and take advantage of the upgrade program. Besides not supporting the latest Insteon hardware your controller doesn't support the latest encryption which impacts you being able to connect to cloud hosted mail services like Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.

You also miss out on the extensive updates to the core operating system like variables, weather, and miss out on the opportunity to seamlessly integrate new services and hardware like Amazon Echo, IFTTT, Sonos, etc.

I have a very old ISY 99i (still in use). The case is virtually identical to the 994i. The lettering is different (all upper case on the older ISY), the order is reversed (top to bottom) and the LEDs are blue on the new IDY, green on the old. Otherwise, there's no external difference.

As you replace or add Insteon devices, you'll find more that are not supported by the 99i.
