Controlling driveway gates

Happy Thanksgiving!  Is there a way to control our driveway gates via Insteon?  I would like for ISY to check if gate is open at say 10PM and close if it is.  The gate is remote controlled, and I have to believe there is a module that can send signals to close the gate.  Thanks!

Hi, Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!

It depends on the gate controlling mechanism. Many support dry contacts to both signal operation of the gate, as well as control operation of the gate.

The Insteon branded device that does both of those things is the iolinc

Can you post a link to the manual for your gate controller?

Here is the link.  It is a double gate so I assume I can use some sort of wireless contact where the gates come together?

Thanks for your help!

I took a quick look, It looks workable since its using Normally Open (NO) contacts, which the iolinc supports.

However there are quite a few features. My initial thought is to utilize the Guard Station contacts show on page 25.

Unless somebody else here has this specific model and chimes in, I would suggest contacting Vikiing or the original installer, send a link of the iolinc product I shared above.... tell them what functionality you want to support (from your initial post)and ask them for their view.

The iolinc will need a 120volt wall outlet to plug into, likely in a box near the gate. We can provide more info here base on how you proceed.

Didn't answer this before... no, the gate controller can tell you if its open or closed, no other sensor should be needed.

You can use the guard terminals as Paul suggested to close the gate. There is no way to determine if the gate is open, but sending a close signal won't do anything if the gate is already closed.

Will the iolinc work with a wireless contact?    I assume I would use the gate "close" and common to connect to the iolinc NO contacts?  I do have a 120 outlet at the controller.

The sense terminals on the I/O Linc require a dry contact closure. It doesn't matter if the contact closure is wired or wireless/

Bear in mind, some have reported that if an ALL-ON occurs, the IOLinc responds. If you have on of these hooked up to a gate controllers, it will open in this (rare) scenerio.

If you have zwave in your ISY (and several powered zwave devices to form a mesh), there are zwave equivalents of the IOLinc that are not vulnerable to this.

Which Z-Wave device has both dry contact sense ability as well as an independent relay?

Does the new model respond to the all on? They've updated it in the last few years

Michael,

I take it you use thus unit and it works well with the ISY. How is your experience with this unit?

No, I don't. I have my garage door (and mag sensor) hard wired to my Elk, because I don't trust Insteon (and the zwave options were not available when I made the choice).

Thank you.

Coincidentally. I have that device in my Amazon saved for later list. I don't need much of a push to buy something. A gentle nudge will do B)

I do have a some concerns. I'm at revision 4+, there's too much we depend on to Alpha 5 test (I'd love to, but there's a spouse).

Our main control from the house is KeypadLinc buttons (two garage doors, one driveway gate). I don't see a difficulty using a program to open/close the garage doors, but will the sensor initiate a program (to illuminate the KPL button when the garage door is open) without needing to be queried?

How far away are the gates from a building that will have zwave? If the controller has to be at the gates, and potentially in a metal box, I would make sure the distance for the zwave signal to travel is realistic, vs Insteon being able to travel via wiring.

An email to Smarthome customer support would indicate if the new iolinc has removed response to the all on.
