Dawn.Dusk not working

Recommended Posts

I have the Dawn.Dusk portion of my motion detector set as a controller for a scene. It is not triggering the scene. When I query the motion detector I get a "yes' or "no" for the motion and battery parts of the device but the motion part is blank for status. What am I doing wrong?

The Insteon Motion Sensor will only switch the Dawn.Dusk nodes when the Motion node is OFF. So if your motion sensor is in a location with a lot of traffic and is ON most of the time the Dawn.Dusk mode will not activate. The Motion node needs to be OFF for 3 minutes before the Dusk.Dawn node will update. You also have to be aware of the settings that dictate how dark it has to be for it to register Dusk and the jumper on Pin 5 that tells it whether it is a stand alone sensor or attached to an Automation Controller.

You can test the whole process by pointing your MS into darkeness or lightness and tapping the linking button seven times rapidly. It will send the resultant signal and fill in the dark/light blanks, if working, without waiting for the 3-4 minute reporting delay.

This is good to test and calibrate your settings, as mentioned by andyf0, above.

I don't think you can turn off the motion sensor to use the Dusk.Dawn node. The seven tap test is a one time event to force the MS to send it's Dusk.Dawn state. I don't know of any Insteon device that will give you continuous light level monitoring. Now if you had the Z-Wave dongle ........ lots of choices.

This makes sense. So I can turn off the motion node on an MS and then use that MS to control an outdoor light scene. Right?

No.

You cannot disable the motion portion of the MS.

You can disable the Dark/Light blocking of the motion signal on an Insteon MS but the dark/light signal is always sent to ISY.

Use the seven tap test to force send a Dark/Light status signal.

If that doesn't work, factory reset the MS and use the Restore function in the ISY admin console to replenish the links again.

Hi, I don't believe you can turn the motion node off. Even if you got rid of the device from the ISY, the behavior is a function of the sensor itself.

I use Jumper 1 to limit sensitivity. While I do run into this problem when configuring and testing the MS because I am moving around it, this is rarely a problem in actual use. For good measure, an ISY program that triggers the dusk activity at dusk as a fall back.

I also use Night Only mode (Jumper 3) and On Only (Jumper 4). This will save the battery, and also reduce the chance a little of it being in motion sensing mode before dusk.
