apostolakisl Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 So what FreedomPop device do you have? If he wanted to copy you he would need a OBI and then FreedomPop connects to it via USB or ethernet? Then it would be a separate system for him just for backups. Then the OBI connects via tradition phone line to the panel. I have two of the netgear routers. https://shop.freedompop.com/product/used-netgear-6100d-lte-gateway-cdma/NTG-6100DR I bought them on ebay. They arrived drop shipped directly from freedompop. There is this referral system on freedompop and the ebay people use it to get the bonus points, which I got as well. So, basically, instead of 500mb/mo I get 1.5G/mo. (edit: doesn't look like anyone is doing the ebay thing anymore) But, really doesn't matter, I only use the freedom pop for for the voip for the alarm. Nothing else. Currently I am at 43MB with 17 days left in this month cycle. So, I guess it uses about 100mb/mo. I think most of that data usage is background syncing stuff or something. If you look at my itemized usage, it is only like 6mb/month. I tried to do internet monitoring over the freedompop, but it just doesn't work because it put my elk and ISY on different networks and I couldn't figure out how to route traffic between the two without going to the internet and thus consuming my freedompop data. It uses Sprint LTE network, so like I said earlier, you have to have that signal at your location.
jasont Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Thanks for that, apostolakisl! Looks like they're out of stock on the FreedomPop store, too. I'll keep my eyes open. Looks like the OBI can do WiFi with a USB dongle, and then I could use it with any of the FreedomPop hotspots?

I found this for $150. http://www.bonanza.com/listings/FreedomPop-Netgear-LTE-Gateway-6100D/400785347 No idea about bonanza.com I got two for $59, sucks for you that this is no longer a thing. The wifi hotspots with a wifi dongle on the obi should work. Especially if you put the hotspot right next to your obi. freedompop used to have other gateway's available, but I don't see any of them. They were advertising this hotspot on my login page for $19.99. https://www.freedompop.com/offer/803sbanner?utm_oscampaign=FP_US_WebDesktop_Sub_Hotspot&utm_osplacement=HomePage_Mid-Lft_330x249_Open&utm_oscreative=USWLS_803sbanner_803sBlueSlash19
MWareman Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 FYI - FreedomPop rides on the Sprint network. Certainly a great option for an alarm communicator IMO (as long as there is a good Sprint signal and you can find a dial interface...)

Good find! I haven't sorted my new backup plan yet. This might be my go to option. Need to check the signal.

It looks like they use ATT service but will fall back to T-mobile if no ATT signal is available. So, it would seem that you could use the GSM hotspot if ATT is a better signal at your location. My experience indicates that 200mb is plenty of data for voip alarm monitoring.
apostolakisl Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 This thread got me thinking. How to backup my internet connection, but just for certain devices. https://www.amazon.com/Cisco-Systems-Gigabit-Router-RV320K9NA/dp/B00DGH08OC/ref=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_t Does anyone know if this device can do it? I would like to have only specific devices on my network have backup, I don't want everything to switch. Otherwise, I want everything on the same LAN. I need VPN, so this device fits the bill there. I tried putting the Freedompop Netgear router behind my main router and physically connecting the items to backup to the Netgear, but no matter how I played with the settings, I just couldn't get the routing to work.

We should start a new thread. I just did a roll your own router using pfsense (https://pfsense.org/), using an older PC I had. I have only had it for a week so still learning. I had to buy was an Intel I340 network card, which came last weekend. So far its been easier to work with than the Mikrotik I was testing.
MWareman Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 +1 for pfSense. Used if for years (and M0n0wall before it). I would struggle to go back to consumer NAT devices now...
apostolakisl Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 Just looked at the manual for that router. Looks like no way to configure WAN port usage except for 1) backup mode where all traffic goes there upon primary failure, and 2) round robin load balancing.

Come join us here: Backup ISP via Cellular https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?share_fid=23986&share_tid=21113&url=http%3A%2F%2Fforum%2Euniversal-devices%2Ecom%2Findex%2Ephp%3F%2Ftopic%2F21113-Backup-ISP-via-Cellular&share_type=t I also think it can be done. There's a post about routing specific traffic through a VPN so I am sure it can be modified a bit to work. You would need to change the "VPN" interface to the cellular interface instead. Then setup the NAT/Firewall/Routing rules. That's all I'm at though. https://blog.monstermuffin.org/tunneling-specific-traffic-over-a-vpn-with-pfsense/#more-797
