James Peterson Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Just a quick poll. See attached Screenshot

shannong Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I voted Left. However, I do want to voice my opinion again that I'd really like the icons to change so that the text labels can utilize the full width of the frame. Right now, there's not enough space for me to label my icons with useful terms. For example, I want shortcuts for four scenes on my home screen. Two for the ceiling fan in the living room, and two for the ceiling in the master bedroom. There isn't enough space to label them well.
larryllix Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I find that the round corners look like a larger parentheses for items so... the best IMHO would be the left shot, but with round corners only on the whole device, top and bottom, to emphasise the device grouping. That would make square corners for all boxwes with eight round corners, four on the tops, and four on the bottoms. I am guessing that would be much harder to do, and not an option, though.
jtara92101 Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I like right, and it is more consistent with current design trends. But agree with Larry that rounded corners only on the four corners of the screen might look nice as well. Left needs more "breathing room", in any case. If you are going to have margins that thin, just get rid of the (outer) margins altogether. You might experiment with eliminating the circles around the icons. It will give a BIT more room for the text. The left one seems to have some confusing background image behind the tiles? It shows through in the inner margins. I'd get rid of that, whatever that is.
jtara92101 Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Oh, I actually hadn't noticed the shading behind the legend/icons on the left. I do like that. But I think the order is unnatural. I think it might be better with those at the top rather than bottom. I think then they would be seen as similar to "headlines" e.g. as used in a news story, or a table. If you feel the shading (left) makes it too "busy", one way to set off the legend would be to move it a bit to the left. Only makes much sense, though, again, if the order is reversed. Heading/content. Not content/heading.

Duh! I must have not looked close enough. I thought all the left and right coloumns belonged to one device, each column. In view of that I changed my vote from left to right with rounded corners. Agree with headers on top.
MWareman Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I like both... I must be odd... Any chance of a toggle?
shannong Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I picked left because I like the shading where the device labels are. But I like the right for rounded corners with more inter-spacing between icons.

But I like the right for rounded corners with more inter-spacing between icons.I think that's what I like as well. Maybe the right, but add shading to the device labels... Also, have you thought about the Google Material Design guidelines? I know that would be a complete revamp, but another possibility.
jtara92101 Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Also, have you thought about the Google Material Design guidelines? I know that would be a complete revamp, but another possibility. The right is pretty close to Material Design. Google has moved away from "flat, flat, flat" toward subtle shadows/layered look. I would use some different colors for primary/secondary label/value text. Perhaps only as subtle as different shades. I shouldn't have to stare and search for hierarchy - it should jump out at me. (Without jumping out at me and hurting my eyes!) I'm not an Android user (iOS) just jumping in here cause it's kinda fun. I write apps, but am certainly not a UI/UX expert. But I've worked with some very talented people who design for legibility and fat fingers (construction trades) and have picked up a few things. Out of curiosity, does Agave use a webview UI? If so, the world is your oyster! It is useful to open pages in a browser (or remote debug session, possible for both iOS and Android) and then noodle with CSS directly in desktop browser inspection/debug tools. (Chrome with remote session, in this case, IF using a webview UI.) Oh, one more thing I just noticed: too little contrast between the green dots and the black icons, IMO. The icons look muddy.
Mecheng70 Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Left. And maybe a toggle for a more compact tile (smaller font, etc). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
stusviews Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I'm concerned about the different icons at the top.
James Peterson Posted February 3, 2017 Author Posted February 3, 2017 I'm concerned about the different icons at the top. ???
James Peterson Posted February 3, 2017 Author Posted February 3, 2017 Your concerned that one pic was taken from my emulator and the other from my daily driver phone? sooo... confused.. Don't shoot the messenger.
G W Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I'm not concerned about anything here. I'm only an interpreter.
shannong Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I'm concerned about the different icons at the top. ^ This is why we can't have anything nice. More importantly, which emulator do you use?
James Peterson Posted February 3, 2017 Author Posted February 3, 2017 ^ This is why we can't have anything nice. More importantly, which emulator do you use? standard emulators in android sdk. I use Android studio so everything is in one nice wrapped up package. easy to use.
stusviews Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Your concerned that one pic was taken from my emulator and the other from my daily driver phone? sooo... confused.. My concern was a comparison if the screenshots, left vs. right. There was no mention that the different images were made under different conditions. Thus, no real valid comparison can be accurately detected.
jtara92101 Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I'm concerned about the different icons at the top. The different icons at the top (dark green background) are part of the Android device status bar. They are not part of the app. FWIW, those icons have always confused me as well! The iPhone device status bar icons have always made perfect sense to me. The Android ones always leave me scratching my head. The TOP row of icons at the top (white background) are I would guess from a screenshot tool? ----- BTW, I just realized you actually have to VOTE to have your VOTE recorded! (as opposed to just writing "I like the one on the ..."). In all fairness to the lefties (even though I just now finally voted right), it seems a lot of them failed to actually vote. NO parallel to recent U.S. election. No parallel at all.
jtara92101 Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 ^ This is why we can't have anything nice. More importantly, which emulator do you use? OT, FWIW, in case you are an Android developer: I like GenyMotion myself. Runs X86 Android under VirtualBox. FAST.
