Aeotec Z-Wave Plus Doorbell Gen5 ZW056-A: Making it more useful.

Hi folks. I just acquired the above doorbell and have successfully added it to my ISY network. In the admin console when I click on the doorbell within the device tree, I see the device display panel on the right showing the Status, and three buttons, ON, OFF, and QUERY.  The Status displays as either ON or OFF depending on the last button you press.

Currently pressing the ON button rings the chime and the OFF will kill the chime if it is part way through playing the .mp3 file.

By default, when you press the remote doorbell button supplied with the Aeotec doorbell unit, nothing happens with respect to the ISY-994i.

However ...

If you set the doorbell's parameter number 80 to a value of 2, the doorbell communicates with it's controller, (the ISY-994i ZW/IR Pro) and the following is displayed in the Event Viewer at Level 3:

Tue 02/14/2017 10:33:29 AM : [ZWAVE-RX ZW010_1] [01090004000A0320]...
Tue 02/14/2017 10:33:29 AM : [ZWAVE-TX        ] ACK
Tue 02/14/2017 10:33:29 AM : [ZWAVE BASIC     ] ZW010_1 Reports value 255
Tue 02/14/2017 10:33:40 AM : [ZWAVE-RX ZW010_1] [01090004000A0320]...
Tue 02/14/2017 10:33:40 AM : [ZWAVE-TX        ] ACK
Tue 02/14/2017 10:33:40 AM : [ZWAVE BASIC     ] ZW010_1 Reports value 0

The reported value of 255 is transmitted when the remote button is pressed and the .mp3 file starts playing and the reported value of 0 is transmitted when the .mp3 file is finished playing.

It would be really nice if this information could be reflected in the status value of the doorbell such that the user could run an ISY program based on:

If Doorbell is switched on then ...

I have set up a doorbell monitor using the Insteon based doorbell kit; the IOLinc and the ELK doorbell/telephone circuit board ... it works fine, but to be honest it is a bit of a kludge.

Would it be possible to add this Z-Wave detection feature to the ISY firmware for this device? (hope, hope :) Thanks!

Do you know if the doorbell works with the existing doorbell cables?

Sorry, I didn't see your question. NO it does not. It has it's own RF LINK push button. If you need to use your hard wired doorbell, then you need to use the IOLink and the ELK doorbell/telephone ring detector. You don't need to use the zwave push button. You can ring the zwave doorbell from the ISY however.

Hmm, the forum system seems to be having problems, perhaps it's the latest version of Chrome? When I press Post, nothing seems to happen, but if I go to more reply options, and post through there it seems to work. I lost a long, well thought out reply here when it all went sideways. I'd suggest copy'ing your posts to a buffer in the short term in case you run into this too!

Has anyone experimented more with this? Some thoughts and tests:

  • I bought the ELK doorbell kit, but can't use it, as the voltage is too low. Since I have 5 of these Aeotec doorbell buttons, I'd love to be able to re-use them with ISY.
  • Does anyone know how the Aeotec doorbell buttons communicate with the doorbell speakers? The instructions share how to pair them, but not how to unpair. Does the term imply bluetooth or Z-wave? I tried to Z-wave pair it to ISY, but no luck, perhaps because it was already paired with the doorbell speaker.
  • I tried the event viewer on level 3 after forcing param 80 to 2. I don't see the status changes mentioned above, but the Z-wave log does get very chatty. Would this become a problem if used long term, as the debug info could be crowding the channel? (especially if replicated x5 speakers)
  • Any possibility of getting the status changes to show up via websocket? That would allow another program (such as a listener on rPi) to trigger.

Thanks for any suggestions and help!

The Elk doorbell kit is meant for a standard wired and powered doorbell. Nearly every standard doorbell transformers has adequate voltage for the kit, usually 12-24VAC. What's the rating of your doorbell transformer?

The Aeotech doorbell button uses RF to communicate with the doorbell. It's not Bluetooth as it has a much greater range than Bluetooth can provide. The Aeotech doorbell itself is a Z-Wave device, the button is not. What specific difficulty are you having pairing the doorbell with the ISY
