BACK UP your ISY

Featured Replies

Seems there are a lot of users that have problems that could be easily resolved by doing a restore backup on the ISY yet they don't have a viable backup.

Good programming practice is to back up your ISY configuration anytime you make changes. It only takes a few minutes to backup and will save you hours or days of having to start from scratch should something go awry.

I make a backup after I either add/delete devices/scenes or 'qa' new program changes. Backups all go in a network folder, and I modify the name to briefly document what's new.

I also do one after any changes.

When I update firmware. I do a backup just before the update and one after verifying the new firmware installed correctly.

I play with my programs frequently, but in view of the 15-25 minutes to boot the admin console and run the backup, I try to backup after major changes and maybe once per week, if I am in that computer location.

UPDATE: OK I exaggerated for my faster 8 core machine. I timed it this time...

... it took 45 seconds for admin console to load, and 3 minutes 20 seconds for backup to save the file, total 4:05

I don't use my slower machine for backups as the times listed initially are just too brutal.  Love that XML! :(

I have been caught with an out of date backup once and it wasn't fun.

I was curious so I just timed my backup...

It took 9:42 seconds to load the Admin Console, from the point where I entered the userID and password. To start from scratch, it took 20:50 seconds to start the Admin Console, bring up the ISY Finder, choose the correct ISY, open the Admin Console, enter the userID and password, and load the nodes. This can obviously vary based on my speed to select the ISY and type my credentials...

The backup save to file took 2 minutes and 54 seconds.

Not a lot of time to avoid recovering unsaved changes!

It took you almost 10 minutes to load the admin console? Are you running it on a 386 with 4MB of RAM? I'm not sure what other peoples' experience is like, but takes about 20 seconds on my 4 year old laptop...

LOL... I guess I wasn't specific enough... that was 9 seconds and 42/100 of a second.

How many programs and variable?

I am guessing about 300 programs, and 350 variables, for mine.

On my smaller 2.1GHz single core

1 min 15 sec to load admin console, with login. 2 min 50 seconds to load programs.

Most time is spent creating variable and scene widgets.

Interesting question... I had no idea so I counted them... I have 297 programs!! 77 variables and 177 network resources.

I'm using a 4 core 3.2GHz processor.

  • 1 month later...

My backup started to present an error.

It runs all over the files and stops at around 64% and presents an error "Could not retrieve File /CONF/DISCLAIM.UDI" and therefore another Error "Could not Create the ZIP File".

Besides that everything seems to be ok

Running on version 4.6.2. I have several other backup done on the same MAC OS machine.

Thanks in advance.

Are you backing up to your local harddrive?

Try rebooting the ISY and your Computer then give it another fry.

Yes, backing up to a local hard drive as I did several other times.

Rebooted both, no luck at all same error.

Thanks

Do you have any ZWave devices?

What version of the ISY firmware and UI are you running?
