ISY won't come up after power shut off

So I've recently installed a new ISY & PLM.  When I got the thing the ISY finder was not able to find the unit on my network.  After following all the trouble shooting and not getting it to work, I performed a factory reset.  After the reset I was able to login into the ISY and get started with an Insteon switch in my office.

After I got the switch working and every thing looked good, I decided to move the unit down stairs where it will live on a permanent basis.  After moving it and plugging it back in I was not able to run the Admin console and the ISY finder could not find the unit???  After several hours of pulling my hair out I decided to perform a factory reset.  Well that did the trick and I was able to log in again, however I had to restore from a backup.

So now I've had the unit installed for several weeks and have added several switches and sensors.  Everything has worked flawlessly up till today when I had a power failure at my house.

After the power failure, I was not able to access the ISY with my iPad (MobiLinc) or run the Admin console.   All the lights on the unit are normal with no error or flashing.   The Ethernet lights are green as well.

So I went ahead and did a factory reset and system restore again, which of course fixed the problem.

To me this doesn't seem correct based on all the information I've read about the unit.

Is my unit possibly bad?

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum

Do you have the ISY assigned to a fixed IP address on your network. If not give that a try Then reboot the ISY.

When you tried to run the Admin Console did you do it from the LAN. If so di you get any error messages?

You shouldn't have to, or need to, do a factory reset or a restore from a backup under the circumstances.

Sometimes after a outage another device will occupy the IP address you assigned to the ISY unless you reserved that address in your router.

So I have it set to DHCP, the router has a spot reserved for the ISY's MAC, it gets the same IP every time I get it up after a factory reset.

I'm using the Admin Console on my PC connected to the same LAN as the ISY box.

I've been using an IP scanner on my network, and I don't see anything using the IP that it eventually gets.

I'll give it a static IP outside of the range my router gives out and try a reboot, see if that solves the issue.

Great forum btw, thanks for all the help!

Can you find the ISY on your router list of attached devices? If you can bring up the ISY finder, then add the IP address and port, if any (bottom of finder panel). Include http:// (or https if you set that).

I haven't heard of an issue like this.

I suggest factoring resetting your unit again (hopefully you have a backup), then manually install a new firmware.  It probably shipped wtih 4.5.4, you could go with 4.6.2  Or you could try the 5.x firmware.  The point being, get it to re-write the firmware.  Even if you go back to 4.5.4.

http://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/22000-release-462-is-now-official/page-1  to download firmware zip file (don't unzip)

Navigate to:

Help/manually upgrade my lighting

Then point it to the zip file you download from the forum.

I assigned it a static IP, same as the one I reserved on the router.  The unit re-booted after the IP change and came up fine.  I unplugged the ISY and the PLM from the wall socket, waited 60 seconds, plugged in the PLM, waited 30 seconds, plugged in the ISY.

ISY Finder: Not found

The router shows it as being offline with a reserved IP.

IP scanner shows nothing at that IP.

Waited 10 minutes and still not found.

Pushed in the reset button, nothing happens.

I'm thinking I have a bad unit???

I've noticed that when I do a reboot from the admin console the lights on the front flash and blink.  When I do a power reset, only the power light comes on and nothing else.  Also pushing in the reset button does nothing to the lights.

I'll try re-loading the firmware.

smacbride,

Do you have version 4.6.2 of the admin console installed?

If not then clear your java cache, including all applications, then install the 4.6.2 admin console.

MWareman: no.

OK. Just as an FYI there is a long standing issue when using network resources to call the ISYs own REST API via 127.0.0.1 that can easily completely lock up the network stack, rendering the ISY inaccessible.

There are also some tight loops that can do that.

The other possibility is an IP conflict. Your ISY has a dhcp reservation - is it at all possible that another device has that IP from being manually set? Test by powering off the ISY, ping the IP then within a few seconds perform an 'arp -a' command to see if the IP shows up. If it does, you have a conflict...

Easy way to rule this out is to connect the ISY to a spare router that has nothing else connected.

OK here is what I've done:

  • Manually re-install the 4.6.2 firmware.  No effect.
  • With the unit turned off, I can ping the IP and nothing responds.  Also running an IP scanner shows nothing at that IP when the unit is off.
  • Power cycle the unit:  only the power light comes on and it never reboots, IP scanner shows nothing at that IP
  • Pushing in the reset button until the lights start to flash: unit reboots and I can get it working just fine.

So basically the issue is that the box won't recover from a power cycle which seems like a hardware issue to me (I have 35 years of experience in IT)

Right now I have the ISY box plugged into my battery backup system so I'm good for my upcoming trip.

I have a ticket opened with support to see if I can get them to send me a new ISY box.

Thanks for all the help!

Hello,

Lets roll back to some basics as I didn't see this covered by anyone here. I want you to remove power from the ISY Series Controller. Unplug the Ethernet cable from the back of the unit. Apply power to the ISY Series Controller and in about 30~45 seconds the memory and red error LED will flash together.

Does this happen?

Another option is to remove and reseat the SD card in the ISY. I had a similar problem and that resolved it. Make sure you remove power from the ISY first.

No, the only light to come on is the power light.

I would follow what Techman said and follow up. If re-seating the Micro SD card doesn't bring it back to a normal state it could be a bad card. If its not the Micro SD card there may be a problem with the controller. As the test I outlined is supposed to detect a missing Ethernet connection. If we fast forward a little bit my thoughts were if the desired LED's were lit but the IP address wasn't showing up it could be a bad Ethernet cable, or port on the switch / router.

For anybody reading this:

I was able to get the box swapped out with a new one, and the new one works perfectly.

Thanks for all the help.

Appreciate the follow up on this. If it's any consolation the hardware issue stated by you is very uncommon.

Rock On . . .
