IBM ~ Quantum Computing pushed to 50 qubits

IBM one of the leaders in the computer industries has yet again pushed the threshold in this new and ever evolving technology: https://www.engadget.com/2017/11/10/ibm-50-qubit-quantum-computer/

 

I don't pretend to know how this can be applied in a real world scenario but people have thrown out idea's like AI, to solving complex problems quicker. IBM has spearheaded the *Watson* of so called thinking computers and the system has been used to show case how it can access massive amounts of data in real time and offer solutions to questions posed.

 

Watson has been seen in the TV show Jeopardy . . .

 

Deep Blue was the system that beat the grand master in Chess . . .

 

Whether or not this next evolution will usher in AI where the system can actually *Learn* and not simply recite stored facts who knows. As of this writing I haven't seen anyone prove they can pass the Turing Test: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test

 

I've been very interested in AI for decades but nothing that has come to market or even talked about has shown this will ever be. There have been quite a few fantastic movies which have show cased such a AI topic. These movies invoke the imagination of awe and fear all in the same time.

 

My hopes are at some point *Man* will have learnt enough about *With great power ~ comes great responsibility* <-- Peter Parkers (Spidermans) Uncle Ben's quote. That we truly understand and appreciate that (IF) AI is ever to materialize in our lifetime that limits, security, and morals are followed.

 

We can not go into the years 2020 ~ 2200 where SkyNet, Terminator, iRobot, Ex Machina, Humans, Chappy are things that can be. There must be a *Human Prime Directive* that is hard coded to ensure this technology is not abused or made to harm anyone. If this so called quantum computing can find the cure for Aids, Cancer, what ever ails man kind lets go for it!

 

If the end goal is to simply think we are the creator and feel compelled to show case how big our balls are. We have already missed the mark and the technology and effort squandered away as so much dust.

 

This is a remarkable time to be alive and perhaps one day such automatons will help bring comfort to the infirm. Help man explore the world from the skies, seas, space. Inspire us to be better, do better, and evolve to be better.
