Smarthome has their Insteon t-stat on sale today.

I'm thinking this would be a good upgrade from my older 2-component Insteon t-stat (the LCD no longer has backlight).  Does anyone have good/bad experience with these to shar?  Are there any better options?  By that I mean a Nest for $249 is NOT a better option.

There are much better options. You get what you pay for. If 250 is to much, if go for the ecobee lite or the nest thermostat E

As per lilyoyo1 above. I have two 2441ZTH stats and I wouldn't use them anywhere human comfort is needed. One won;t work with ISY at all except to send back sensor values at low resolution. The update  resolution is about 1.5-2.0 degrees C. They are the most bottom end quality I have ever seen. Many people had trouble with electrical interference using the wired versions.

ecobee runs circles around them all with it's internal 0.1C resolution and 0.3C calibratibility, advanced fan cycling (not once per hour and settable for any schedule  session time) and easy switching between winter and summer schedules. (Holds two schedules so the switch-over is just one bit to flip). Out of about 6 brands I tried I found ecobee to be the only unit with sensor stability to my satisfaction.

The ecobee3 lite should price about the cheapest smart stat you will find. Watch for the specials with the remotes included.
