LFMc Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 Here is a new "do everything" smart remote that I can't find too much on it yet. I don't tend to like glass screens on my remote. I am more of a tactile feedback kind of person. (-: It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has tried this unit out. https://www.smarthome.com/sevenhugs-smart-remote-control-your-tv-and-smart-home-with-one-remote.html

The few-buttons-mostly-screen thing was a poor UX in the Pronto back in the 90s and hasn’t gotten much better. That’s one of the things that I like about the Harmony Elite - *lots* of buttons, all of which can have both a press and press-and-hold action. As cool as that remote looks, I think usability would suffer. I feel the same way about the Neeo, which got some press in the brief period when Logitech disabled the XMPP interface.

I just watched the video on it. The 3-D spacial recognition feature, if it works well, is a big selling feature. It literally changes to the correct mode as you aim it at the equipment you want to control. Very cool.

When I started watching the video, my immediate reaction was ‘boy, this looks like a typical slick Kickstarter video that overpromises and never delivers’. At least the first part was correct . My primary use of the remote is to control a set of components that are clustered in a cabinet in front of my couch, so it’s not clear how effective it would be. For the other stuff, I use my Echo/Dot via voice, so I’m thinking ‘meh’.
apostolakisl Posted January 4, 2019 Author Posted January 4, 2019 I like real buttons. I don't look at the remote for 99% of the things I do with it and without a physical button, you don't hit the right spot. I just started my Roku Hulu test week. Not at all impressed. The video looks way overcompressed. I have heard that there might be some throttling by ISP's, I don't know. But youtube tv was indistinguishable from cable. The hulu buffered several times in one hour, got fuzzy for a few seconds here and there, froze for a split second here and there, and had the "strobe" affect on fast moving (ie Jimmy Fallon clapping his hands) objects. I'll probably not even bother with the full week and go to Youtube TV. Anyone else tried Hulu?
oberkc Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 I am on hulu now. Have used sling, directtvnow. Channel choices and on_demand are my primary drivers, but the interface to hulu I find too complicated and I agree that picture quality, along with video/audio sync can be a frustrating factor. My mother just signed up for youtube and that looks like a good option. I may try that some day. Directtvnow had a wonderfully intuitive and simple interface, but I missed a couple of channels.
