Lost Power to ISY 99

I believe I lost power from my PLM to the ISY 99i/rf or the ISY went bad. Power LED on the ISY is not lit. I have a old PLM 2412U that I would like to use to test with the ISY. Can I use this PLM or do I need a 2412S PLM? If not then I will get a AC power adaptor to check the ISY.

I've tried resetting the PLM with no luck. The power LED on the ISY will not light and do not see the ISY on my network. If there is a problem with the ISY what can I do to reset it?

The ISY requires a serial PLM. If you have a Radio Shack nearby, try picking up a Radio Shack 273-028 and set it to 6V.

If the ISY powers up, the PLM is most likely bad and needs to be replaced.

I've been thinking of getting an external supply to plug into a UPS. Question: Since power is already coming from the PLM, what happens when an external supply is plugged in to the ISY? Is there internal circuitry which makes this work ok? Any special cable required so power from the PLM is disconnected? I want to make sure I don't fry anything in the PLM or ISY if I do this.

Thanks,

I picked one of these up today. One more question: No indication on the ISY whether it should be tip-pos or tip-neg. Which?

Thanks,

Hi Mark,

The spec. is for 5VDC centre positive @300mA min.

I use a universal adapter set to six volts. MikeB has indicated that both 6V and 4.5V will work; not sure if he has a preference for one over the other.

I now have the Radio Shack AC power adapter and plugged it into the ISY, still no power and can not see it on my network. I have the adapter set at 6v, no lite power LED on the ISY. The PLM light is lit and has pwer to it. What can I do next?

Hi Aaron -

It sounds like your unit is bad and should be replaced. How long ago was it purchased, and from where?

Please feel free to email support@universal-devices.com if you'd prefer.

Hi Mike,

I recently purchased it from Smarthome date on the invoice is May 14 2009.

Should I contact them for a repalcement?

Hi Aaron,

Yes, calling Smarthome will be the quickest way to get a replacement. I am sorry for the trouble.

You can leave the PLM plugged in normally and simply add the AC adapter.

I too have power outage problems and note that when my switch (not the router) is powered down that ISY loses coomunication unti re-booted. Is it possible to get one of these AC arts and plug it in all the time (in addition to the PLM power) and then have a backup power supply run the AC in the event of power outages? If I simply repower my router ISY is OK, but for some reason the switch repowering causes ISY to go into flashing mode.

Yes, you can certainly do that.

Thanks. So just to clarify, there is NO problem with an Ac and the PLM power pulgged in at the same time? What is your track record with back-up powering the modem, router and switch? If the house power was off and ISY could not talk with the units anyway would I end up with the same flashing issues? Problem for me is that if I'm not there, I can't re-boot ISY until I come back home.

Hi aLf -

Yes, no issues with powering by a separate AC adapter along with the PLM. The ISY should be able to recover from a switch reboot / network disconnect. I assume you're running firmware 2.7.0 or higher?

Do you have another switch you could try attaching the ISY to as a test?

Tried a different switch. No change. I am in the process of changing ISP's and will get a new router. That may change my problems, we'll see. That said, do you or anyone else have any reccomendations on a very good wireless router. I need quality first then ease of programming as I have several cameras and ISY that need port forwarding.

I'm a fan of Linksys routers and wireless APs, though not so much their switches.

Check out the Linksys WRT310N to start.

Just to double-check, I tested my testbed unit here plugged direct into a router. Cut power from router, ISY will flash Mem & Error LEDs to indicate network connectivity issues.

Left disconnected for 20 minutes. Powered the router back up, and within several minutes the ISY re-established a connection.

I'll try the 20 minute wait! I have always just looked at the flashing and unplugged the Ethernet cable and re-booted. I'll check to see if it comes back on its own.
