Jimini Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 I added my mini remote 2342--2 to my ISY994i-Pro and it now lists it and the 8 buttons. I could not find any way to link the buttons to a responder. I then followed the procedure for linking a button on the remote to a dimmer module. Now the remote button correctly turns the dimmer module on and off. The ISY status of the button correctly shows on or off but the ISY status of the dimmer module does not change. It is clear that ISY has not made the connection between the button and the dimmer module. How do I accomplish that? I find no reference to linking buttons to responders or other devices.
jec6613 Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 Create a scene, and add both the button and device you wish to control to it, the ISY will create all the necessary links for you. You can also go into the scene and change various details of how things are controlled, such as how brightly the dimmer turns on and over what period of time. Since you've directly linked the devices, after you've created the scene I'd suggest restoring the devices (right click on the device and click restore) which will wipe the direct link the ISY doesn't know about from them and leave it only with the scene control the ISY created.
lilyoyo1 Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 He doesn't necessarily have to do that. Since both devices are the same, the isy will automatically overwrite that particular link. In the future however, all linking needs to be done with the isy to prevent issues and for it to properly manage devices. To add to what jec6613 said, put the dimmer into your scene first, then set the remotelinc into linking mode and then add the button to the scene as a controller.

Not always true anymore, there are some device version pairings that will send both commands in sequence (annoyingly enough), and the remote won't always overwrite the programming properly on a newer revision 8 button remote. You don't want to know how I had to figure this out
Jimini Posted June 29, 2019 Author Posted June 29, 2019 Thank you for both replies, especially on a Saturday morning. Since I'm trying to learn how do do things the right way, I followed jec6613 advice and restored the dimmer. Then I created the scene with the dimmer as the only responder linked to it. But I am unclear how to connect the mini remote. I pushed its control button to put it into linking mode but the ISY didn't know I was doing doing. Seems like I need to tell the ISY to look for something. Or maybe I need to tell it to look for something before I put the Mini Remote into linking mode?
Jimini Posted June 29, 2019 Author Posted June 29, 2019 I'm sorry. I got it now. Just being dense this morning. I had to repeat the same process for the Mini Remote as I did for the dimmer. That worked. All is good. Thanks for the help.

You can have a half link issue where you reset a response but it can possibly still respond to a controller device

Some 2016-ish vintage Insteon products I've had have been a bit janky when it comes to being programmed using two different methods.
