Another, another cannot determine insteon engine thread

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm almost done replacing insteon switches in my house.  I have about 3 left that are still working.  33 switches and 30 have had to be replaced, with some more than once.  Well, today's message is the first time I have ever had this message before.  I got the Cannot determine insteon engine.   I checked numbers, and letters and I know I'm right.  I have tried and tried but to no avail.  I have had more problems installing the new switches than I ever did with the older versions.

I have not installed any new equipment of any sort and no new lights or anything.

I restarted my launcher and when I did this last time, now it says it can't find over 20 of my switches.  What is going on?????????????????????

Could this be a PLM problem?

I can't get anything to communicate right now.  No device seems to communicate with the isy.  It was fine until I put in the new switch.  Coincidence?  Do I need to do a factory reset of my isy?

I have an older PLM. A 2412 model.

The only thing I would like to address is did you replace all of the switches due to electrical fault?!? Such as a lightning event or from a brown out (voltage sag) condition?!?

No, just going bad over a several year period.  One here and one a couple months later.

You could hit the switch but it wouldn't turn on but it would turn off. The switch just going on and off constantly.  And some just losing power totally.  Just what has happened to most people that have gone with insteon switches.  No lightning.

The older 2476D or 2476S power line only SwitchLincs. Some production runs. Had an issue with the small tact switches the paddles activated to turn them on and off locally but still would respond to commends. Some On but not off others off but not on.  They actually gave owners with those switches an extended 7 year warranty.

The pulsing On and Off is most likely the power supply failing and the DC ripple triggering on and off. I had an old 2456S ApplianceLinc start pulsing the load. Both the 2456S and 2456D had issues with a 30 volt Zener diode.

It does sound like your PLM is not working correctly.  Your failure rate is extraordinary, I agree with Teken, I would look for a cause beyond the Insteon devices or you may continue to replace devices.  High or Low line voltage?  Add a whole house surge suppressor?

I understand the PLM may not be working properly, but what was happening to the switches had nothing to do with the PLM I"m pretty sure.  Unless you hit the switch in the right place, some would not respond, and so on like I said above.  Hopefully the new 2477D ones that I now have will last much longer than the other ones did.

I had most of my devices back on last night before I went to bed.  I had to write updates to them and they seemed to be working.  I came down this morning and turned it on and around 40 of my devices are now not found. A lot of exclamation points.  I just realized I don't like that symbol anymore.  I hope the fix is a new PLM.

I have not had much time to work on my isy994 or check anything as of late, but I just noticed last night that ever since my new firmware update that none of my programs are working properly.  Many of them are red, some are yellow and some are green.  But none of them are functioning.  To top it all off, it has been over 4 or 5 years since I programmed these and to be honest, my brain has failed me because I don't remember how I did what I did to get my programs to work.

I hope there is a place or someone that would be willing to help a poor soul out.

The new 2413S PLM will take care of 90% of what ails you. So, my humble suggestion is to stop any further tinkering until that hardware arrives as you will need to do it all over again.

With respect to the problems seen in the programs after a firmware upgrade. You have really three options and they are these in no specific order of relevance or importance:

ISY Restore: If you have a good working copy prior to the upgrade this will restore the bulk of the programs and settings.

Fix & Go: You’ll need to sit down with your thinking cap and update all programs that have a yellow flag. More often than not this is very easy and the program is simply missing a pointer to what hardware you want to turn on. It could be a time, schedule, network resource, weather, etc.

Delete & Go: When all else fails and if you find the program(s) just don’t work. It’s less stressful just to delete and recreate again.

Take a deep breath, schedule this task when your mentally ready and time isn’t an issue. Turn on some relaxing music, tall cold drink, comfy sweat pants, and if you have a dog have him / her next to you for moral support.

Everyone’s here to help so come back if and when needed!

I got my new PLM today.  What do I do first?  I have it all plugged in.  Do I do a restore PLM?

Disable battery writes if you have a pro version. Than select restore PLM Modem.

It said failed resetting the PLM.

You selected restore and not delete PLM - correct? Also, if you go to tools and select the PLM details does the system indicate connected, Insteon ID, along with the firmware version.

Both should match the new unit on hand. Lastly, as a reminder you must power down the ISY. Make all connections to and from the new 2413S PLM.

Then, plug in the new 2413S PLM and wait at least 10 seconds. You will then power up the controller and wait for it to come on line and settle down.

Let us know if you need for help.

I selected restore.  It kept on giving the error and no matter what it would not work.  I shut of the isy994 again and started it and now all is working.  I had to mess with about 4 or my switches to get them to be recognized but I finally got them.  I could never get 2 older appliance links to work so I have just ordered 2 new on/off lincs or whatever they are called.  It all works again though.  Thanks for your help.
