Cannot Communicate Error

Hello All,

Recently from within the Administrative Control of the ISY, I have started getting this error:

--

Cannot Communicate With Den (E 54 D7 1). Please check connections.

--

It seems that sometimes the lights in my den respond to ISY programs and other times they do not.

I'm just wondering if this is a sign that the switch is defective (and I need to RMA) or if there is something else I can do to try to bring this back to life?

As always, I appreciate any and all input.

Cheers!

Hello elite-rob,

The first thing I would do is to check the log file, filter based on your Den Switch, and then furthermore filter based on the Type = -2. This will give you the times when ISY could NOT communicate with your Den switch. Please check and see if there are any patterns in the time when this happens. If there are no patterns, then it all likelihood you have a signal/noise issue. If there are any patterns, then we have to figure out what other device may be causing the noise.

With kind regards,

Michel

Hi Michael,

Thank you for the prompt reply!

I went through the logs (after applying the filer you suggested) and found all the instances where the DEN switch produced an error.

I could not really find any sort of pattern.

The only thing I could really infer from the logs is that it prints a message every time I run a program that impacts the DEN light. (For example, on my Harmony remote, I have a function for ‘enter theater’ that dims the lights. It looks like each I’ve done that over the past few days it has been logged.)

I have a ton of Insteon devices in my house and this is the only one that seems to be having a problem.

While I do have my home theater equipment in the den, it’s not really that close to the switch. And, the Den switch is only a few feet away from the kitchen switches, which have never produced an error.

I’m totally up for trying anything you think may fix this since I really just want it to work.

(After all, clicking ‘enter theater’ and having all the other lights in the house turn off except for the room where you’re watching TV is slightly less than cool; hehe).

Cheers!

Hello elite-rob,

My pleasure. Now that you mention, do you have any FilterLincs? If this switch is in the vicinity of your home theater, I strongly recommend putting all your entertainment equipment on a FilterLinc. To test if this scenario works, unplug all your entertainment equipment. If no longer do you have the comm errors, then a Filter would fix the issue. If you still have the issue, then you might want to make sure that the neutral wire is not loose on the switch itself.

With kind regards,

Michel

Hi Michel,

I currently do not have any FilterLincs.

This morning I unplugged all of my home theater equipment and did some tests. Unfortunately, the switch was still not responsive via the ISY.

It’s also worth noting that the home theater setup has not changed at all and a few weeks ago this switch was working perfectly. So, I’m not really sure it’s interference from the home theater equipment, since I suspect it would have been producing problems for a long time now.

Later today I’ll try looking at the wiring on the switch to see if someone might have come loose. I’d be a bit surprised if a wire did actually come loose, but I guess it could have happened.

Is it possible the actual switch is defective?

It’s still under warranty with SmartHome, so I can easily RMA it.

Thanks for your help… it is greatly appreciated!

Hello elite-rob,

It's certainly possible that the switch is defective and you can surely RMA it. This said, however, please try one more test:

Right mouse click on the device and then choose Restore Device.

With kind regards,

Michel

Hi Michel,

I’ll try everything since I’d rather not RMA it if I don’t have to. =)

I tried doing “Restore Devices†and it failed.

So, I removed the DEN switch from the ISY and then performed a factory reset. After that I re-linked it. All of that worked properly.

I ran a few commands (turn on, turn off) and the switch was responsive.

Then I tried to run one of my programs that increases the light to 20%, waits 10 seconds, and then increases it to 50%.

It successfully changed the light to 20%, but then stopped. At this point the ISY kicked back the communication error. When I did this test, all of my home theater equipment was _off_ (although still plugged in).

This evening I’ll take a look at the actual wiring of the switch because I didn’t get a chance to do that yesterday.

If you have any other ideas, please let me know and I’ll try them as well!

Thanks for your help!

Hi elite-rob,

This sounds a lot like a defective switch.

Michel
