Replacing Device

Recommended Posts

I just replaced a 8 button keypad. When I go in the ISY some devices when I right click there's an option for "replace device with" for the newly installed keypad the option is not there when I right click. Checked a few of the switches and most have that option including some of my existing keypads but a few hasn't. Any other way to replace besides going true all the programing again.

You can only replace like hardware. So if one is a switch vs dimmer - no dice!

Replacing 8 button keypad with 8 button keypad. Not sure if same model. Wouldn't right clicking on device still give me the "replace with". At this point it doesn't know what I want to replace with.

Go to HELP -> About and show me what it says. Along with an image capture of the device you have now and what you installed.

Here is a screenshot of about and the old and new devices. I tried again on all my existing keypads and it looks like i must have checked regular switches last night as none of the keypads seems to have that "replace with" feature. Old keypad is 2486D and new one is 2486DWH8. So I assume none of the keypads have these feature. Seems strange to leave that out.

Welps, based on your image capture your biggest issue is a mismatched firmware & UI. Both need to match or you will see odd things happen. Regardless, you should really be on the latest 4.08 firmware branch as this includes *New* hardware support and bug fixes. It may very well be one of the reasons you don't see a *Replace With*.

Make a good back up and than update that super old box . . .

Just to confirm your controller is a 99 or a 994?? If it's a 99 you're stuck at the 3.XX so don't want to send you down the wrong rabbit hole. If your controller is a 994 Series Controller by all means update to the latest 4.08 firmware branch.

It is a 99 so looks like I'm stuck and will have to do it manually. Might be time for an upgrade soon. Do you know for sure if the new firmware allows this? Just curious. I won't upgrade just for that reason.

There are few things in life that are for sure. But, in this case the 99 Series Controller (3.XX Firmware) does not include the latest hardware from Insteon. Thus, the controller has no reference as to how to add it or know it can be *Replaced With*. As an aside, I would encourage you to send in a TSR (Technical Support Request to UDI. As in the past they had a upgrade program that allowed long time customers the opportunity to upgrade for a nice discount from 99 to 994.

Asking is free . . .

I can't say if asking will result in anything but Michel has always been good to his customers - Link this thread! ?

I don't know if Replace With existed back then, so take my .02 cents with a grain of salt......

However one problem I see is that Basement KP is a folder called Basement.  To use Replace With I believe that both old and new advice must be at the root level... that is move Basement KP up to the root level to make the swap.

I will try when I get home, however it should still show the replace with message since it doesn't know what I'm replacing it with until I chose the replacement.

In V4 and V5, it doesn't show Replace With in the right click context menu IF the device is in a folder, however if the device is moved up to the root level Replace With will then appear in the context menu.

Edit to add:  From the Wiki article on replacing a device.

The device being replaced must not be inside a folder

Ah ok. That worked. Thanks. Everything seems to be back to normal except the toggle mode. The buttons use to turn back of automatically after press. I tried "none toggle on, none toggle off and toggle" For all 3 settings one press turn it on and second press turns it off. How do I set so it's always off.

If I read the sentence above as I think you intended to type it, "Non-toggle Off" seems to be the mode you would be looking for.

That could be related to your firmware and UI mismatch above.

I just read the manual for the switch and this can be done locally at the switch. Will try that tonight. Might just have to bite the bullet and get a new ISY so I can get latest firmware.

Unless they added it back in, I dont believe non toggle off is supported anymore manually
