TriLife
Greetings, I'm starting the implementation phase of my home automation... I have about 100 Sonoff switches connected through an MQTT Node server on Polisy. There are about 20+ Aeotec Multisensors (all USB powered, Gen 5), which need to connect to the ISY. The home is large 5000sqf, single story shaped like a boomerang. Construction is reinforced concrete and a steel structure, which supports a steel roof. The saving grace from a transmission standpoint is that the concrete walls don't reach the ceiling, but stop about 3' short, the rest being glass. You could stand on a ladder and see through the entire house from one end to the other... As a result, the Multisensors are essentially line of sight, with only glass in-between... They are at the most 12m (40') from the next one, if infinite hops were allowed. The ISY sits in the IT cabinet (steel door) in one of the wings, at hip level. In order to get to line of sight with the sensors, I would ideally need to either move the ISY up above that door, or get an external antenna, which I can mount above and outside the cabinet... Can I install a Z-wave antenna to the ISY? 908MHz, I presume? Also, I understand that Z-wave can manage at the most 4 hops to get to the ISY. Is there a way to tell how many hops it is taking? Or telling it, which hops to take? Cheers.

Yes zwave has a max of 4 hops but that doesn't mean the the signal routes through the immediate devices from the controller. If you were to line up 10 devices, it could be device 4 and 7 or maybe 1, 4, and 8. There use to be an external antenna for the isy. You may want to check with UDI to see if they still offer it. Depending on the type of glass, you can still have issues. Pretty much, your whole home will most likely be 1 big headache long term. Good luck with your project.
