Breezyken Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 I have installed a new 2474D 2-wire dimmer switch but when I try to add it to the ISY994i I receive the error message "Cannot determine Insteon Engine". I know this device is RF only, but there are several dual mode Insteon devices nearby. In the list of Insteon devices the 2474D is described as a "Companion Dimmer'; not sure what that means. Any hints to decrypt the error message and get this linked would be appreciated.

Brian H Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 (edited) The 2474D steals power through the Load and designed for incandescent type loads. That maybe part of why it is not being detected correctly. If you are not using a compatible Load. There are two 2474D modules in my drop down list in the add a new device screen. Depending on what the module reported it was. Category 01 Subcategory 18 was the Companion Dimmer description and the 01 24 was the the later 2474DWH. The error "Cannot determine Insteon Engine" says to me the device has been detected but the software is not correct (and I'm probably wrong. It would be nice if the device type was ordered by part number, but Category and subcat must mean something to someone. Any more thoughts and is there a definition/description of Cat & Subcat? Thanks

Thanks "Cannot determine Insteon Engine" usually means one of two things. The PLM is unable to communicate with the device due to noise on the power line or a poor communication link between the device and the PLM. The other possibility is that if you tried to link using "new Insteon Device" from the admin console you may have typed in an incorrect 6 digit address. Brian H Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 (edited) The Category and Subcategory are assigned to the modules by Smartlabs and reported when you add a module. They are in the module. They use to be listed on the modules sales page but I am not too sure they do that anymore. Like Category 0X03 is Network Bridges. Which the PLM is part of. The Subcategory is different for the USB and Serial port models and sometimes even revisions. Brian H Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 You may try opening the Event Viewer in Level 3. Try to add it and save the Event Viewers contents. So you can look at the messages back and forth from the problem module and the ISY994i.

I am using a valid load (2 60 watt incandescent bulbs). Thanks for the links to the Insteon command list and device tables. The Youtube video is helpful and I will check all the details and try the method in the video to establish communication.
Brian H Posted September 10, 2021 Posted September 10, 2021 (edited) It does look like the module is not sending back any responses. When you try and add it. As there are no messages received back from the module. Just the messages being sent. The 2474D is Insteon RF communications. No power line communications. Make sure you have a Dual Band module close enough to pass the RF commands to and from the ISY994i. Some have used a spare Dual Band module for the needed communications. An Access Point or Range Extender would also do. Double check the modules six digit Insteon ID. We have seen B,8,0 and D sometimes misread. As a incorrect ID would also not respond. The technique in the YouTube video to start linking revealed that what my old eyes thought was a 40 was actually a 4D. Everything went smoothly once that was corrected.
