JoelW Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 Since I upgraded to 5.3.3 I have had nothing but problems. This is a total PIA. I have been using this system for years and years and it has always worked beautifully. Not any more. Cannot determine Insteon Engine trying to add a new device. Tried every combination of steps to add a new 2477S Rev 6 including manually using the set button on the device but no such luck. Motion Sensors and simple programs. Okay, I had to rewrite most of my programs which was a pain but now I cannot get many of the programs to work at all. I have a motion sensor that is linked to an outlet directly and the motion sensor turns it on as expected. I have a program that is triggered by the outlet turning on which turns on a light fixture, waits 8 minutes and then turns off the light fixture. Cannot get this to work any more even though before the update it has worked for years. I deleted the program, rewrote it completely step by step but it will not work. I could go on and on and list other issues with this version but it seems like I am stuck. What to do? On top of all this, if Insteon is really being discontinued, all my devices will need to go the same path as all my X10 switches did a bunch of years ago.

What version of firmware did you upgrade from? Is there a reason you didn't upgrade to 5.3.4, the latest firmware?

In the seven years I've had an ISY, I've never seen am update notice in the admin console. Always check here for firmware updates and follow the directions to a "T". https://forum.universal-devices.com/forum/15-current-release-betas-and-bug-reports/
Techman Posted October 2, 2021 Posted October 2, 2021 Did you clear your Java cache, including its applications and then download the ISY finder? Did you read the instructions before updating, click on the image below for instructions. The update from 4.4.6 to the latest version requires some user manual intervention.

It will never do an update notice from V4 to V5, but I've been hoping we would see those again in v5, but it hasn't happened yet.
JoelW Posted October 2, 2021 Author Posted October 2, 2021 Does anyone know how I can add the 2477S switch without getting the "Cannot determine Insteon Engine" error message?

Techman Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 "Cannot determine Insteon Engine" means that the PLM is unable to communicate with your device. Either you entered the incorrect device address or there's a communication problem between the device and the ISY What is your UI firmware version, the ISY and UI versions must be the same for everything to work properly.

Did you look for yellow program icons in your program tree? When the upgrade cannot figure out something the program icon is marked with a yellow icon. You need to review all programs to see if there are any program lines commented out and fix them. Edited October 3, 2021 by larryllix

asbril Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 (edited) I, kindy and respectfully, object to the title " New Version (5.3.3) is HORRIBLE " . You clearly have an issue that needs to be resolved and if it can not be addressed here in the forum, then you should open a ticket with UDI. But 5.3.3, and now 5.3.4, works fine for the vast majority of us, so my strong suspicion is that one of your settings may be wrong, not the upgrade itself. Edited October 3, 2021 by asbril 1

It sounds like you're having a bad experience, but it has nothing to do with the version. Reading above it sounds like there were two problems, first a painful upgrade likely caused by extensive use of "adjust scene" in programs, adding to that are Insteon communication issues. I don't have a crystal ball but my guess would be that the Insteon communication problems started before you upgraded to v5. In trying to resolve problems you ended up upgrading to v5 without understanding what to expect. Now you have two massive headaches instead of one.

I apologize for my anger but in answer to your post, I did know what to expect and did rewrite all the necessary programs and all of them (with one or two unexplainable exceptions) worked fine. No, I had no issues with anything ISY or Insteon before the upgrade - it all started after.

Joel, I don't know what happened in your case, but my experience with UDI support has been beyond excellent. Pls try again and I trust that they will respond.

lilyoyo1 Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 I'd make a pigtail out of an old extension cord, plug it in close to your PLM, and use it to factory reset the devices you are trying to add. Once factory reset, choose new insteon device, press and hold the set button until you hear the chirp to see what happens

It's possible that you're misreading the ID, it happens a lot since Smartlabs changed the font they were using.

Today, I tried replacing the device with another 2477S. The original was Rev 6.9 and the one I tried today was Rev 7.3. It installed easily and worked. Either the original one I tried (new out of the box) was defective or the older version Is somehow not visible to this new version. Anyway, thanks for the support. I will work on the other issues and hope if I need some additional support I can get it from UDI.

What is the ID (xx.xx.xx) of the device that wouldn't install? If other 2477S installed correctly then you system and ISY firmware are working correctly
