Help on Scene not Dimming

Recommended Posts

I have a problem with a new light I installed and a scene I created.    The Chandelier is controlled by a 2477D dimmer wall switch.

I think I have set it up correctly so that any control will turn the Chandelier on at 50%, but all except the button on the 2334-222 ( 8 Button Dimmer, Steve 8 Butn) turn it on at 100% though I have set up for 50%.

Also if I turn on from the ISY itself it goes on at 50%.

The attached screen grabs show the setup and views when turned on by the 8 button and when turned on by a 2477 ( Rbn Chandelier Cntrl).

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.

Thanks

In your example you need to configure the scene 5 times.

You have the root of the scene clicked in the tree in the left side of the screen for each screenshot.  You also need to click each RED controller link and configure the scene attributes for what happens when that controller is used.  (this works differently that it did in V4 firmware where there was a copy button)

Here are screenshots of the two controllers that though set to 50% in the scene go to 100%.

Highlight the red node of the scene one at a time and show us that.

An Insteon feature is that the same scene can behave differently based on which controller controls it.

in your scene:

image.png.60f7566bb95a2f2c53f7983aaa3a36e1.png You have the root of the scene selected, the information that you are looking at on the right side of the screen is what happens when the ISY itself is the scene controller.  Move the Blue selector down one line at a time and watch the right side of the screen.  What is shown as you do that is what happens when each of those controllers are used.  In other words your scene must be programmed 5 times.... that can be the same 5 times or 5 different configurations.

That actually looks correct.  Sorry for being persistent but you wouldn't believe the number of users that can't grasp that concept.

What I would do next, is one at a time, factory reset each device, then select the device in the tree, right click it, and select "Restore Device"

2477D's and 6 or 8 button KPL's the reset proceedure is pull out the air-gap for 10-seconds, push it all the way back in and HOLD IT until the long beep Stops.  then after a pause it should beep 2 more times.

I've forgotten how to factory reset the wireless remotes, google "Insteon <Model Number> manual" and look for a pdf from cache.insteon.com near the top of the search results.

I actually have to to this about once every year or so for our masterbed room overhead light, I think the memory in the switch is flakey, but it's out of warranty and only happens every year or so and I only have to actually facto.ry reset the 2477D itself.  The other causes that can randomly trash can be communication errors, and the fact that the switches are often shipped out with junk links.. .as a result I try to remember to factory reset new out of the box switches as as they are installed before being added to the ISY.

Thanks, no worry about being persistent.  If I do a factory reset will hit still show up as  a device with the given name ???

I have actually already deleted both the controls that don't work from the scene, did a factory rest, then reinstalled them as if never there before and then added them to the scene and reset all to the 50%.  The one I have not reset is the 2477 that actually has the light tied to it as it is in the attic and tough to get to.  It also works fine with the 8 button.

i have spent hours on this including installing some new switches before reaching out to you.

I guess I will do the attic switch when I can.=; then let you know .  May be a day or so.

Again thanks,

Steve

Factory reset the switch clears the switches memory, the switch remains in the ISY... "Restore Device" then causes the ISY to reload the switches memory as the ISY wants it programed.

You could try just doing a "Restore Device" without clearing the memory first.

If your attic gets hot, most do, it's likely not a good place for the switch.  I'd try to move it anywhere into the conditioned space.   In one house where I helped straighten out some problems we cut in some switches near the ceiling in a bedroom closet to move switches out of the attic.  I have one near the ceiling in my laundry room just because I didn't want it in the attic for something we added.

It can certainly be frustrating when you know you're doing it correctly but it doesn't work.  Insteon also can drive me crazy at times because it takes so long to reprogram complex scenes and/or multi-button controllers.

Thanks for all your advice .  I have already tried the Restore.   Also have switches in my attic for more than 5 years with no issues.  Was the only way to add some outdoor lights and others where trying to get feeds from the garage was virtually impossible.   I have had no issues with any regardless of temperature.

To give you a laugh I had all fail in a  short time.   took me a little while to realize that having a new roof put on , nailing and banging was not a great environment for the switches.

Again thanks for all.

If you right-click on each of the controllers in the scene and choose "Diagnostics->Show Device Links Table" and post a screen shot of each, we can check to see if the correct links are actually in the memory of each device.

The last ( 8 button) did not give me diagnostics choice.

You can't see the Device Links Table for an individual keypad button.  You have to display the Device Links Table for the entire keypad (i.e. right-click on the top line of the keypad list).

Here are the screen shots from the controllers.

All of the Device Links Tables look correct.  I've taken each one, sorted them by the first five columns and then tried to explain what each link represents:

I also experimented to see if the ISY will see device links that are created externally (i.e. created manually between devices) and the answer is YES.  So the records shown above should represent all of the links in each device.

All of that leads me to believe that things should be working which leads me to the conclusion that maybe they are.  Looking back at the screenshots from your original post it looks like the "Master BR Chandilier" is coming on at 50% no matter which controller is used.  However, when you used "Robn Chandilier Contrl" that switch came on at 100% even though the "Master BR Chandilier" came on at 50%.

Is that what you're actually seeing?  If so, you can fix that by setting the Local On-Level for "Robn Chandilier Contrl".  You do that by selecting "Robn Chandilier Contrl" in the Admin Console and setting its "On Level" to 50%.  You'd also have to do that for "Robin - MBR Chandilier".

If that's not what you're actually seeing then I'm stumped.

Thanks for all your work.

1)  In actuality looking at the light itself.  When I use the button on the 8 button controller the light goes on at a dimmed level.

When I use either of the other wall switches it goes on to full level.

2)  If I manually dim either of the other controllers I can bring the light down to the dimmed level.

3)  I CANNOT get the system to do the lower on level for either the 2477 or 2476.  When I set the "On level" to 50% and try to "Write " the changes nothing happens.   I have even set to 50%, the did a restore rather than write changes and nothing happens.

Should I do as MrBill recommended and reset all devices then restore them ???

Thanks,

Steve

How are you trying to "Write" the changes?

The GUI is NOT intuitive...  CHange the on-level dropdown then press On-Level to the LEFT of the dropdown to "Set" the value.
