ISY Finder : Not Found

I'm not a new user as I have been using since November 2017.  Today (November 6,2021) I launched the ISY Launcher and it did not find my ISY device.  I am running Windows 10.  I have restarted the ISY device.  I have Cleared Cache.  I got a new start.jnlp.  When I run the start.jnlp I get the window that should have my ISY device in it ... but it is not there ... it says ISY Finder : Not Found.

This is the first time I have ever experienced this. I can access the ISY via the web using https://my.isy.io/index.htm

The reason I even tried to login to ISY was I installed a new Insteon device and wanted to add it to the ISY.

My last backup is from May 2021

@dobenland, very interesting indeed. There's several possible issues, but most concerning is you say you cleared Java Cache and still doesn't find it. It's possible you might be on wifi and the ISY is not reachable through this method if something changed in the router. Have you changed any network settings in the last few months?

The quickest way to make sure you can get to the ISY with the admin console this way is manually add the IP address.

If you can do it this way then we know the ISY is at least on the network and you're able to access it. Otherwise, it's possible that the ISY might not be connected to the same network as your computer.

When you access the ISY Portal does it show the ISY as being online? (green light to the right of the UUID)

Perhaps log into to your router and get the IP address of the ISY. Look for the MAC address to match the UUID if it's not programmed into the router as the ISY.

I'm guessing you got the start.jnlp from the launcher (linked in these directions).  This would then put the "ISY Launcher" icon on your desktop. image.png

This sounds like more of a network related issue than ISY issue if you're using the launcher. The only time that I recall it coming up and not finding the ISY is when I try to access remotely and the launcher has "forgotten" the URL I use to access the home system.

If the ISY Portal shows the ISY is online you can then use the long URL in the portal information and add that and login using the Portal credentials.

OK ... Now the ISY Launcher is finding the device.  I click on the ISY in the ISY Finder window and select Admin Console (LAN) and it brings up the Admin Console which asks for Id and password. Once Id and Password are entered, the Admin Console brings up a list of my devices and then instantly flashes a message "IO Error" and crashes.  I cannot see the rest of the IO Error message because it goes so by so fast.

The web interface is working properly both from the PC and from my phone.

My PC and the ISY device are both connected via ethernet cable, my phone is using WiFi.

I am able to get to the ISY Dashboard via the Launcher.  And the Dashboard shows the error messages.  See screenshots of the Dashboard and both error messages.

I have also tried with firewall and anti-virus turned off with the same bad result.

Is there a way to start over and use the backup to retrieve my devices and programs?

OK ... after spending much time trying to debug ... I uninstalled Java, reinstalled Java, Used the Java Uninstall Tool, ran CCleaner registry cleaner, reinstalled Java, snoozed the firewall, finally I completely exited the firewall and the ISY is working.

I restarted the firewall and added the ISY IP address to the firewall and now ISY is working just fine.

So it was the firewall all along ... not sure how the firewall got changed.

Thanks for the help.

Great job going through all the troubleshooting steps! Glad it worked out.

Just so we know...what firewall are you using?

Do you know what version of Jave you had that you removed? Perhaps it was outdated? But certainly sounds like the firewall was the issue from the start.

Just for reference there is some information about firewall config in the wiki.

The firewall I am using is ZoneAlarm Extreme Security and have been using it for years.  I added the IP address of the ISY to the trusted zone.

I do not know what the Java version was before I reinstalled Java.

There is a step I did not mention in the debug info:

To fix the error message socket open failed java.io.ioexception: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host -  Open Java, select the Advanced tab, select Enable operating system’s restricted environment option (toward the bottom), select Apply and click OK to exit.  see https://windowsreport.com/existing-connection-forcibly-closed-by-remote-host/

I also did reboots after most of the debugging steps.

I think there were 2 problems:

  1. The ISY IP address needed to be added to the firewall trusted zone
  2. Java needed the Enable operating system’s restricted environment box checked.
