jkraus Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 I tried a Zwave motion sensor with my isy some time ago, with poor results due to isy in the office in the house and the Zwave motion sensor in the garage some 50ft away. I see where there is talk of repeaters around the house to solve this. But to me this is moving backwards from insteon that both its wireless and power line communications is a superb solution. I really do not want to put repeaters all around my house to use Zwave devices that insteon does not have a similar device. Is there such a thing as one device that will take zwave signal and conver to to insteon powerline signals ? or some other more convenient solution?
Techman Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 The Zwave dongle in the ISY has an effective range of about 20 feet. You'll need either a repeater or additional Zwave devices, which will repeat the RF signal, in order to have an effective Zwave mesh network. Insteon is no different, it is also a mesh network which requires devices to repeat its signal Zwave is a RF only protocol and cannot be converted to Insteon. A good Zwave repeater such as the Aeotec repeater will repeat and amplify the Zwave signal and would probably solve your problem
JTsao Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 In my experience, both of the ISY z-wave modules (300 and 500 series) had poor range and performance compared to the Zooz USB stick that I am now using in the ISY on Polisy - some communications issues with older Schlage Locks and other devices never were completely resolved by using Aeon repeaters with much shorter distances than 50 ft - but now I have much better range and communication 1
matapan Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 The easiest solution is simply to find an Insteon motion sensor. They're available on eBay and other places online even if they're not on the Smarthome site. No repeater necessary, no protocol conversion. The other alternative might be to used a wired motion sensor attached to an IOLinc.

My experience is that Insteon range is much greater than ZWave, particularly room to room. The main problem with Insteon is that the company that makes it is incompetent and appears to be dying.
