Change the internet ip address?

Hi!! First post! I searched the Wiki but couldn't find an answer. I need to change the ip address for internet access. I have DSL with dynamic ip so I signed up for a forwarding service to have a "fake" static ip. Is there a way to change the ip address the Universal Devices Administrative console uses? Right now, it just uses the ip address my DSL provider gives me. I want to use the ip address I set up with my forwarding service.

Thanks!!!!

Hi mitch236,

ISY uses whatever is your external/ISP's IP address. If you have Dynamic DNS or a forwarding IP address which points to your existing router, then you should be OK.

With kind regards,

Michel

Usually dynamic DNS services give you a host name to use instead of an IP address. Assuming that it is set up correctly, you should be able to use that host name instead of your external IP address. If the external IP address indeed does work already, you do not need to do anything.

To check to see if your external IP address works, you need to determine what it is by going to a site like WhatIsMyIP.com. Then, you need to try to access that address using a computer that is not on your network. You might be able to use a machine on your network if your router supports using a loopback address (another way of saying that this doesn't always work on all routers).

If the external address does not work, then you probably need to set up port forwarding on your router to your ISY's internal address on port 80 (for HTTP) or 443 (for SSL). Some ISP's block these ports. If that's the case, you may need to set up network address translation (NAT) on your router to translate some other port to port 80 or 443.

Thanks guys, I thought about it last night and realized that as long as the ISY automatically updates the ip address from my DSL provider, I'll be fine. I'm assuming the ISY regularly updates this info?

Thanks!!!

You never explicitly confirm that your ISY is connected to a router (wired or wireless), which is what is actually connected to your DSL modem. Assuming this is the case, the ISY doesn't care about what the external dynamic address is from your ISP. So there's nothing the ISY needs to do when that IP address changes.

Or is there some other situation you're describing?

The ISY is connected to my DSL modem/router. I somehow assumed that the ISY needed to have the correct outside ip address updated but now I understand how it works. There's no problem, everything is working perfectly!

Thanks!!!
