Hello all

I am just wondering about home automation and the possibilities of it i have have look in abit of X10 but i'm wondering if ye can help me. i am doing a project about home automation and is it ethical to have it installed

in the house. the research i have done is ok but i would like to get into more detail like how the user connects to the device remotely eg he or she wants to connect via the web or iphone to connect to the bedroom light or a socket in the kitchen. is it possible to get a warning message to your phone or an email message to say that one of your devices is broken or the light is blown. aslo is if possible to view a electrice meter online of your house so

that you show how much energy is been used when you are away.

Hello John,

If by ethical you mean secure then, yes, the ISY uses SSL to encrypt messages. Insteon, compared to X10, is a million times better at having a unique address for each device so it becomes unlikely that your neighbor can control your devices. Oh, not a million. There are 1677216 address available for Insteon and 256 for X10. Divided out it comes to 65536/1. Seems like a million.

The ISY serves web pages to interface with it from any browser. You have to make a port available to the internet on your router. Then steer that port to the ISY.

There are several independent applications that interface with the ISY optimized for specific devices.

Most Insteon devices do not report a load failure. The ISY can send emails and texts dependent on other conditions.

There is a module for the ISY that reads the Brultech Energy Monitors.

we need more information. If your away, why would you care if a light bulb blew unless they are exterior security lights?

Interesting question. Can a Switchlinc recognize an open circuit and report it?

Hi all,

All devices with sense can report status changes. The main issue is that we get the same signal whether or not the device is turned OFF (locally) or the load has gone bad. For INSTEON there's no distinction between the two (unfortunately).

With kind regards,

Michel

Good to know. I wasn't sure how I would use this... but I am sure that we would have come up with something fun. :)
