windrockwater Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Long time Insteon and ISY user. I finally pulled the trigger and bought the EISY to upgrade from my (totally working) ISY setup. Mostly to get some newer i3 outlets to work better. Currently running the latest firmware 5.3.4 on the ISY and its connected to an (old) Insteon Power Line Modem #2412S. Again, everyting is working for the most part. 50+ insteon devices and programs and portals. I realize now I might have also been required to order the Serial PLM kit with the EISY to work with the 2412S? So, should i order that now? Or should I pull the trigger on getting a new PLM since i am upgrading things in general? Interested in your advice. Thanks. Quote
Techman Posted September 22 Posted September 22 The 2412S PLM is not compatible with the eisy. Ideally you should use the 2413U USB PLM, however Insteon.com shows it as backordered with a due date of November, 2025. The advantage of the USB PLM is that you don't need an adapter cable, just a standard USB cable If you don't want to wait then the 2413S with the serial to USB adapter cable would be your second choice. Either way you need to follow the replace PLM instructions available in the UD Wiki. Quote
Brian H Posted September 22 Posted September 22 No do not use a 2412S. It has a slower speed Link Database and depending on age a 417 Link Database size. It also has a unregulated +12VDC usually close to +18VDC on one of the PLM interface connector. Quote
windrockwater Posted September 23 Author Posted September 23 Okay so for now, the new EISY I just bought is a paperweight until the backordered PLM comes out. i will wait on the 2413 to be released then. Thanks. Quote

From the wiki: https://wiki.universal-devices.com/Eisy:User_Guide#INSTEON_Support Quote INSTEON Support eisy supports the following PLMs: 2412S 2413S 2413U, and 2448A7 If you have the 2412S or 2413S (serial), you will need our Serial PLM Kit eisy only accepts USB connections for the PLM. (The network port on the eisy ONLY supports a wired network connection.) Perhaps @Brian H is more accurate with the reason(s) not to use. However, if the eisy indeed supports the 2412S and that's what @windrockwater has then perhaps it would work with the correct cable for connecting to the eisy. Of course the serial PLM kit is needed. NOTE: @windrockwater if you have the old serial cord that came with the serial PLM (I'm not even sure if the 2412S might have included it...I know it came in my 2413S). You could try an adaptor from Amazon (this cable has worked for me since getting the eisy) to try the PLM you already have. Otherwise, you'll need the PLM Kit that UD is selling. That's the best (single cable) way to go from older Serial PLM connector to USB. And the only way UD supports troubleshooting possible PLM issues by using their cable/kit. Quote
Brian H Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Yes the 2412S did have a DB9 to RJ45 cable. In the packing material and many tossed it not knowing it was in the box. You would have to convert the DB9 end to USB and double check you got the correct connections. On a USB converter as the serial pins are not the typical DB9 pin out. The eisy serial cable is still the safest. May be the user can give us the revision number on the 2412S. So we maybe able to find out if is the original 417 link database or the 2000 link database. On the ISY994i the 2000 link database would start to miss link at ~ 800 links. Theory was memory too slow and the ISY994i timed out. Quote

windrockwater Posted September 23 Author Posted September 23 It’s a v2.8 that I have. Pic attached. I see one of my first posts on this forum is circa 2007. So it’s a pretty old PLM! Quote
Brian H Posted September 24 Posted September 24 I have information on a V2.75 (417 Links) and a V2.9 (2016 Links). I do not have any V2.8 unit to look at. So I can not say if it is the small or large Link Memory. Quote
