Hi there,

Is the installation of a whole house surge protector insurance against damage of Insteon modules installed in a house against power delivery issues from the power company? I see posts here about how users have power outages that damage Insteon modules when the power is turned back on.

I think it's a meaningful and relatively inexpensive type of insurance of expensive electronic assets. Many electronics, not just Insteon, can be damaged by surges in the powerline base on black/brown-out & re-power or lightening strikes.

You can buy them at the hardware store. I've installed my own but you can also have an electrician do it.

While it does not provide a guarantee, I think it protects an expensive home automation installation from uncontrollable events. The Intermatic one I installed, many years ago, came with a limited warranty if you submitted the paperwork.

Hard to say if it works. I have 3 whole house surge suppressors and a nearby lightening strike still took out a bunch of stuff. Much of it only connected to power lines. Only 3 Insteon devices fried out of like 80, fortunately. But still had many thousands in damage.

I don't live in an area affected by lightening, but we do have periodic power outages during the winter months. I had several Insteon devices fried during outages like this. After installing a single whole house suppressor, I have not had any.
