Trouble adding IKEA Bilresa Matter Switch to Polisy

Featured Replies

Hi,

I use and enjoy my ISY devices every day. I have a Polisy Pro running 6.04 with the internal zwave/zigbee matter dongle.

Background:

I am looking to replace a couple of aging Remotelinc 2s. IKEA is now selling a matter capable Bilresa two button switch for $6. I got a couple and I think they are nice.

I have a matter network with thread over wifi running in my house with Home Assistant. The Bilresa switches pair/add to matter OK on Home Assistant.

I have Zwave and Zigbee devices paired with my Polisy. I have never tried to use matter on my Polisy; no devices added.

I understand that to add an already paired matter device to an additional matter "server" is not just scanning the original QR code but requires getting a new pairing code for the matter device from the first/existing matter "server".

I am unable to get my Polisy to pair with the Bilresa switch. I have tried several ways.

Open Home assistant, ask to share Bilresa, get pairing code. Open UD mobile, verify Matter is enabled. Ask UD mobile to add new (this would be first matter device on Polisy) matter device. UD Mobile asks for pairing code - I enter the sharing/pairing code from home assistant. After several minutes the request times out. Bilresa not added. I have tried adding Bilresa using both UD mobile on android Pixel phone and on iOS iPad. Bilresa does not add. Tried with Bilresa within inches of Polisy. No Bilresqa added.

At a different location I have successfully added/shared a different matter Bilresa to two matter "servers" ((Nest hub and Home Assistant) on the same network. Bilresa is seen and works with both matter "servers."

Is Matter really running on my Polisy? What other ways should I try adding/sharing Bilresa to my Polisy?

Any suggestions?

Thank you for you advice.

That's one thing you need to be careful about: the actual terms. Thread doesn't run over wifi, it runs over zigbee. Home Assistant is purely software. If it's interacting with the Ikea switch ok, then it's talking to it though something. You would need to tell us what that is. If it's a regular IP network connection (wifi or ethernet) then you must have a border router in your setup. If not, do you have a zigbee device that Home Assistant is going through? If you do have a border router, then you should be able to add it to your Polisy with a share code as you described. On the other hand, if Home Assistant is using a zigbee interface of some kind, then this won't work as things currently stand.

Despite it's name, the ZMatter board isn't yet involved with supporting Matter. The Matter functionality of a Polisy or eisy is currently by the IP network connection only. The ZMatter board is a zwave/zigbee board, but UDI doesn't yet support sending Matter commands over the zigbee interface. Until they do, the way to do this is by having a border router in your setup that will bridge the IP/zigbee networks.

I have been experimenting with matter, both wifi and thread. I have an Echo hub and Nest hub (2nd generation) border router. I have several Govee devices that support matter over wifi, a GE Cync bulb that supports matter over wifi, and a Nanoleaf bulb that supports matter over thread. All of these devices are successfully paired with google nest and shared with Alexa, via matter. All can be controlled by Alexa and Next. At this point, the only device that I can share and pair with the EISY is the Cync bulb. I had two Govee devices (Table Lamp and Permanent Outdoor Lights) that I once had paired with the EISY but, without warning or any reason that I could identify, quit working from the EISY and no amount of resets and re-pairing to date has been successful. The Nanoleaf bulb has been intermittent with Alexa and Google, but as of now, seems to be working. I think it once paired with EISY but certainly will not do so now.

I don't know if Alexa and Google are updating their matter standards (currently v1.4?) or whether doing so is rendering the EISY incompatible, but matter on the EISY is generally not working for me (or I am doing something wrong) and I have mostly given up hope that the current version of IoX works reliably with matter.

I have not tried any Ikea matter devices. I will be interested in hearing whether anyone has any luck with these.

At the risk of hijacking @whywork 's thread...

I've also had varying success with Matter. But it's getting better. My only Thread device has been the Nanoleaf bulb, and it has been far from consistent. It's still working with the eisy, though there are often delays with status updates showing in admin console. Make sure you have the latest firmware in the bulb.

For Cync, I have a Cync bulb and also a Cync smart plug. These are wifi Matter devices. Both work with the eisy, though status update in admin console has sometimes been intermittent (often delayed) with them, but turn on and off reliably. The bulb also responds nicely to the color setting commands.

In all cases, I had to add them to another platform first (Google home) and then share them to the eisy. Directly commissioning with the eisy hasn't worked.

Ikea Matter devices haven't arrived at Ikea in my area. I look forward to trying them.
