Advice needed for migration of 994i to eisy

Featured Replies

I've been running an isy994i for the past 14 years, using Mobilinc Pro for mobile access. My devices are Insteon only. I also use IFTTT with Mobilinc to control other things using variables.

I'd like to move to the eisy, but I have a bunch of questions:

  • I assume Mobilinc Pro will not work with the eisy. Is that correct?

  • I assume I can always revert back to my isy994i/Mobilinc setup by simply plugging it back in if I run into configuration problems with the eisy. Is there anything that would prevent it?

  • From what I read here, UD Mobile Portal works better than Mobilinc Pro. How much work will it be to make that switch for things like geofence variables?

  • I use Alexa to control most of my Insteon devices. I believe that integration also relies on Mobilinc. How much work is it to migrate voice control to the eisy?

  • Finally, if I choose to buy a eisy lite, what am I giving up vs. the R2?

Any other questions I should be asking? Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

I don’t know if MobiLinc still works. The last time I used it, it still worked.

You could move back but I’d be surprised if that was needed since you only have Insteon it should be a slam dunk. Just make sure your PLM is either USB version or get the USB to serial device. Locate the official directions and follow them.

UD Mobile works great and is what replace MobiLinc for me. I only used geo fencing with it a bit and dont know how extensive your setup is.

Alexa does not require MobiLinc. You will use UD Portal. If you are using MobiLinc for that you’ll have to remove it and add the Alexa Skill for UD Mobile and enter in your spokens.

Lite just has less RAM-and disk. R2 was spec’d before the price of RAM and ssd drastically increased so UD simply decreased them to all that was actually needed for most users needs to get price lower.

Not correct. Well...somewhat. I used Mobilinc Pro as a standalone app and it still works with eisy for the Insteon devices. Since I'm 99.9% Insteon it still works 100% for my needs. As long as you weren't on their Mobilinc portal you can use the UD portal or local connection (or even port forwarding, but this is not "secure") to connect to the eisy. Mobilinc will not control anything that you add via plugins and I do not use Thread or Z-Wave to know if Mobilinc will control those.

It might be that simple, but somehow the PLM might be a sticky point. I'd expect that you wouldn't want to revert back to the ISY994 simply because the process to move to the eisy is well documented and works well enough that the eisy would work just like your ISY994 and has support from UD should you run into issues. As well as asking on the forums for user assistance with any issues you might run into. Just be sure to read the directions for migration first before attempting so you know the steps and have everything needed to make the migration simple and quick.

"works better" is in the eye of the beholder. It's certainly more current and still being developed to work in tandom with the eisy and current UD hardware/software offerings. Since Mobilinc still works for me I haven't fully ventured into UD Mobile beyond just having devices listed there. Some here you'll see have really gone full on with setup and favorites programming. Geofences work a bit differently with UD Mobile and not needing to use variables like you probably are using with Moblinc.

This comment seems to imply that you're using the Moblinc "portal" to connect the Alexa. If so then you might not actually be using the Moblinc Pro app and more the Mobilinc Connect or X (?) app they developed. However, the UD Portal does link Echo/Alexa with the UD hardware so that would be what you would use. This is NOT "UD Mobile", but the UD Portal (my.isy.io) to make the Echo/Alexa connection and then in Alexa app you'll need the UD Smarthome Skill linked. The directions are in the UD Wiki for setting that part up.

For most users nothing. As mentioned above, with the skyrocketing price of memory and storage UD is offering the "lite" option that should work for probably 90-99% of "home" users. If you're simply looking to modernize your ISY994 and only running Insteon and/or a few limited other automation devices that might have plugins then you won't notice a difference with the lower ram and smaller hd specs. But the Lite version should run plenty of plugins and have enough memory and HD space for almost anything people would throw at it. At least as of today.

My questions to you are:

What is your current system?

What Firmware are you curently running on your ISY994?

How many devices do you have?

How many scenes and programs do you have?

  • When you begin to migrate please make a full copy of your programs (right click the root of the program tree and select "Copy FOLDER to Clipboard" then paste that into a TEXT editor (not word processing app). This way you'll have the TEXT of all your programs that if/when programs get corrupt during the migration you'll have something to reference to correct them.

Do you have any other automation systems? Look at the plugin list to see if you have any systems that have existing plugins that you might encorporate into the eisy system once migrated.

Good luck!
