Buzzhazz Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 I just did a quick review of topic from the top. Michel raised a question that needs to be answered about a possible issue with firewall/AV blocking data being pushed from the ISY. Runs Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer with Device communications events selected and run a Restore Device on one of the devices. This should indicate if device messages are being pushed out from the ISY. Often we use a paddle/button press to test this but the lack of PLM link records prevents that approach. I'm using the kitchen island SwitchLinc as it is a single device with no scenes including virtual three-ways. Here is the result: Fri 12/02/2011 11:03:52 AM : [ E 58 77 1] Preparing Device 'Kitchen Island' for Restore Fri 12/02/2011 11:03:52 AM : [ E 58 77 1] Removing link to unknown device '0 0 0 1' Fri 12/02/2011 11:03:52 AM : [ E 58 77 1] Removing link to unknown device '0 0 0 1' Fri 12/02/2011 11:03:52 AM : [ E 58 77 1] Device 'Kitchen Island' ready for Full Restore Fri 12/02/2011 11:03:52 AM : [All ] Writing 10 bytes to devices Fri 12/02/2011 11:03:52 AM : [E 58 77 1 ] Link 0 : 0FF8 [A2001975B9FF1F00] Writing [A2001975B9FF1F00] Fri 12/02/2011 11:04:00 AM : [PLM ] Group 0 : Writing Controller Link matching [E 58 77 1 ] Link 0 : 0FF8 [A2001975B9FF1F00] Fri 12/02/2011 11:04:00 AM : [ E 58 77 1] Removing remaining links Fri 12/02/2011 11:04:03 AM : [E 58 77 1 ] Memory : Write dbAddr=0x0032 [E5] Fri 12/02/2011 11:04:03 AM : [E 58 77 1 ] Memory : Write dbAddr=0x0021 [1C] With two dozen switches, I don't mind starting over since this is relatively easy with the ISY since I have no backup file (my bad). So--probably a dumb question--how do I delete a device so that I can re-add it. I see no Delete option when I right-click. On perhaps a bright note, after I restored the kitchen island switch, that single link is now showing up under the PLM link table. Progress?
LeeG Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Was Device communications events selected? If not repeat with that option selected. If so there is a firewall/AV problem blocking data from the ISY. Need to understand this first before going forward with anything else. Could be just not selecting the choice in the Event Viewer but there are some firewall/AV issues in recent weeks with updates to AVAST that have been causing problem. Perhaps progress on the PLM links. It may be necessary to Restore Device for each device. If that gets the PLM links back (can see device state changes in the Admin Console when button/paddle is pressed) then take a new ISY backup at that point.

I am almost certain that I did have Device communications selected, but in any event, I selected it again and then restored the same device with a much lengthier event log: Fri 12/02/2011 11:26:00 AM LeeG Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 The Admin Console is seeing device responses from the Restore Device this time so that is good. Do a Restore Device on each device and see if that gets things back to normal. What ISY image is running and what images have been used in the past to get where you are now?

LeeG Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Sorry about the cryptic question on ISY level. What ISY firmware level is currently being used and did you install 3.1.10 or 3.1.12 if running 3.1.13? EDIT: I know the initial post indicated 2.8.16 but sometimes changes are made in evolution of a problem

EDIT: I know the initial post indicated 2.8.16 but sometimes changes are made in evolution of a problem I still am running 2.8.16 under the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" theory. I restored all devices. I have 29 devices and 29 links in the PLM table. All of the previous scenes work locally (e.g. three way virtual switches), but NONE of the scenes work when activated from the ISY. If I delete those and start fresh, won't I be creating scenes that already exist--at the local level?
oberkc Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 If I delete those and start fresh, won't I be creating scenes that already exist--at the local level? It is my understanding that when one deletes scenes from the ISY, the ISY will delete the "locaL" scene records within any affect device.
LeeG Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Are there any KeypadLincs installed? They should have a link record for each button. Deleting a Scene should remove links associated with that Scene so duplicates in individual devices should not occur. The links that should be in the PLM will be deleted but since they do not exist anyway no harm.

Deleting a Scene should remove links associated with that Scene so duplicates in individual devices should not occur. The links that should be in the PLM will be deleted but since they do not exist anyway no harm. I do have several KPLs. When I restore ANY of the keys from a KPL, I see write activity on all buttons in the left hand pane, but when I select the Restore option for more than one button, the number of links do not increase. They remain at 29. I deleted a virtual 3-way scene and readded it. It consists of a SwitchLinc dual band (the load) and the "B" button on an 8-key KPL. The number of PLM links increase by 4 from 29 to 32, and if I understand it correctly, that consists of a link each way between the two devices and a link to each from the PLM. I'm still unable to get a simple CONTROL program to work. I have it set up so that the turning on of a switch should activate another switch (I know I can do that easier by cross-linking, but I am just trying to test a simple program), but no luck. If I change the line from a CONTROL to a STATUS and then test it by running 'Run (if)', it works. If Control 'Kitchen / Kitchen Island' is switched On Then Set 'Kitchen / Kitchen Recessed Lights' On Else - No Actions - (To add one, press 'Action')
LeeG Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Do a Show Device Links Table for the SwitchLinc that should trigger the Program. You are looking for a link record E2 01 aa bb cc xx xx xx where aa bb cc is the PLM Insteon address Then do a Show PLM Links Table and look for a link record A2 01 aa bb cc xx xx xx where aa bb cc is the SwitchLinc Insteon address If both are there run Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer with Device communication events select. Press the SwithLinc On paddle and post the event log. There are still missing links in the PLM if you have 29 separate devices, some of which are KeypadLincs, and there are only 29 link records in the PLM. A KeypadLinc in 6 button mode must have 5 link records for the KeypadLinc with an 8 button KeypadLinc having 8 link records for the KeypadLinc EDIT: when restoring a KeypadLinc all buttons are restored, not just one button at a time.

Hmm. In the Show Device Links table, there are two links. The first is to the PLM, and the other, well, here they both are: OFF8 : A2 00 19.75.B9 FF 1F 00 OFF0 : 00 01 00.00.00 FF 1F 01 There are no A2 . . . records associated with that switch in the PLM Links table.
LeeG Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 I am afraid none of the Restore options are correcting the missing links. Delete and readd the SwitchLinc that triggers the Program. That should get the state changes back for that device. You can do Show Device and Show PLM after adding the SwitchLinc back and confirm the links I described before are there. These links records are Insteon hardware requirements.

LeeG Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 It may be Remove at 2.8.16. UDI changed the name but I thought it was before 2.8.16. Right clicking on other than the primary node may not show Remove/Delete.

Progress. I pulled the switch I was experimenting with out of the 'Kitchen' folder so I could delete it. Then I deleted it and reinstalled it. I found the E2 01 link address for the modem in the device link table and the A2 01 link address for the device in the PLM link table. Then I created a new program that when I turned the device on, it would turn on another set of lights with and Insteon Command and send me a text message. IT WORKED! The event log is shown below. I still have an X-10 K3 address in there for some reason that I no longer need so that appears to be part of the log. Does the log look like it's supposed to with that in mind? So now, should I delete all the devices and reinstall? At this point, just to make sure everything is a clean install, I'd just as soon do that, but I'm open to suggestion. Thanks for all the advice Lee. LeeG Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 These are exactly the Insteon messages expected from an On button/paddle press. Once the correct link records were created the rest just had to work. Basic Insteon hardware has worked this way since 2005/2006. It is the only way I know of to be sure there is a clean environment. Once that has been done take a backup. Then create your Scenes and anything else that needs to be done and take another backup. Note the names of both files in case they are needed in the future.

Excellent. Thanks again for the patience and the help. This forum is invaluable. I'll start fresh tomorrow. Take care. --Rob
Buzzhazz Posted December 4, 2011 Author Posted December 4, 2011 Just an update for anyone who might be following this thread. Short Story: Everything is up and running great. Longer Story: I basically started from scratch, deleting each of the 29 devices I have. I initially could not fins a Delete option but stumbled upon the fact that you cannot delete devices that are in folders. By deleting the folders I had created, the devices within those folders were moved to the My Lighting level. From there, I could Delete a device by right-clicking and selecting Delete. As each device was deleted, the scenes were updated accordingly. When i was done deleting, there were 0 links in my PLM link table (as expected), and my scene folder with the scene names remained but with noting in them (as expected). Then I added a Switchlinc and noted that the PLM link table updated with two records (E2 and A2 prefixes). Then I added an 8-key KPL and noted that it updated with an A2 and E2 record for the device and a single A2 record for each of the other buttons (other than A) for a total of 9 records. A 6-button KPL added an A2 and E2 record and a single A2 record for keys A-D for a total of 6 records. Once I had an idea of what to expect, I turned off the autowrite feature and added all the devices and then turned autowrite back on. When the process was complete, the number of PLM links matched what I calculated there should be. I then turned autowrite back off and recreated all my scenes and then turned autowrite back on. In then end, everything appears to be working just like it should work, and now I look forward to experimenting with the Program features of the ISY. Thanks to those who provided me with their expertise. I'd have been lost without it.
