SMTP From - Formatting Question ...

How (if its possible) can I make the "From" field show something other then an Email address in the ISY-99i Messaging section.

For example I just want the From field to show a name such as "Insteon" and not "something@something.com".

I even tryed using Outlooks format: Insteon and that errors out as well.

No one is ever going to "Reply" to this alart.

* I can put things like: Insteon@anything (without the .com/.net...) and it works fine but I have to have the @ sign in the middle somewhere and that dosent look very good to me.

Thanks

Hello OmegaQuest,

If you use the default SMTP settings, then no. Otherwise, it all depends on your SMTP server. Most SMTP servers out there use the Account information and either ignore the From field OR if you put something other than the Account (email), they will reject the message.

I'm using my own SMTP Exchange Server.

This isnt anything with the SMTP server but rather the ISY-99i not letting me put anything other then something with the "@" sign in the middle of two words.

But even so, shouldnt there be some sort of formatting way of making the From field look better by adding a Name format (such as: "Insteon "

This way the email itself will show a pretty name of "Insteon" and not insteon@domain.com

Thanks

Hello OmegaQuest,

I tested this with multiple SMTP servers and, unfortunately, even with , From field is replaced with the account email address unless the SMTP server is configured with the From.

We can do further testing to see if there's anything we can do to change this.

With kind regards,

When I put the <> in the From Field, the ISY-99i always gives me an error:

"Authorization Failed"

However if I put any of the following formats in the From field everything saves and sends fine (note some formats are not real email addresses, yet still work as long as there is an @ symbol in the From field...):

test@domain.com

inst@on

anything@anything

I just want my users to see a name in the From field, and not a plain/long email address....

Thanks

Hello OmegaQuest,

We the @ sign requirement is from the SMTP server. In short, if you do not have a valid from, the server just uses the account.

I am really not sure what to suggest above and beyond taking a closer look.

With kind regards,

Michel
