I am not a computer genius and don't really understand command line stuff. I'd like to use a button on my Iphone (redeye app) to control the isy. is this possible? I'll need a really dumbed down explanation, please. Link to comment
matapan Posted March 4, 2012 Share Posted March 4, 2012 Hi Someguy, I recently tried a setup similar to the one you are proposing. The RS232 capabilities your Redeye device might enable one to control the Redeye using ISY or any Insteon switch, provided you have the Networking module. To control ISY using the Redeye, one way to do it is to use an ISY-99IR/PRO, the controller with the built-in IR receiver, and set up your Redeye to send an IR command to the ISY's IR eye. I don't use a Redeye, but X-10 Powermids to send commands from different rooms of the house to the ISY's IR eye. This setup seems to work okay. Link to comment

Then what are my options to get the IR signal from my living room to my (finished) basement. probably a distance of approximately 60 feet or so. I believe that I may have an extra CAT5 cable running between the two areas. Could I use that? If not, is there a way to piggyback onto my TV cable or an existing CAT5 or should I go wireless? I didn't buy the optional IR emitter on an extension cable you could connect to the receiver so it didn't have to be in line with device you wanted to control. I don't know if the Radio Shack Kit may have included the IR Emitter on the extension cable. Link to comment

I used a portable TV which was remote controlled as a means to test the responsiveness of a remote command sent from the second floor of my home to the basement. In my setup, it works reliably. Vegetto420 Posted March 6, 2012 Share Posted March 6, 2012 Hey all, Ok Someguy, I have seen your posts in the redeye forum and I have posted this as well. As I have 3 places that run on a redeye and ISY and an ELK as well. All three place's are filled with insteon switches and this would be awesome to be able to hit watch tv and your lights respond to this command. So for the guys here at ISY here is some info and maybe between all of us we can get this ball rolling. The guys over at thinkflood have just released their IP control for devices here is the link to the main page http://thinkflood.com/. So what they are using is a http or rs-232 commands to achieve control with device on the network. And since the ISY is on the network this should work with no problems. Well the only problem is as someguy mentioned most of us aren't to familiar with http coding or rs232 coding. The reason to go this way apposed to the IR way is so that you can get a response back so it's a 2 way not a one way system. So as a user on the redeye I would be able to see if a light is on or off just like most of the moble apps that are out there for the ISY. If there is some way of getting a list of the ip commands that the ISY uses and get them to Craig at redeye then this can become a reality. I know that Craig has a lot of Insteon devices and so do I as well as an ISY. I would be glad to do some testing or help get this going in anyway I can. The reason is that I would rather have 1 app to run everything than 4. Since the ELK can be integrated into the ISY then that gets rid of 1 app and then if the ISY can be integrated into the redeye then I would be down to 2. Redeye as also just added IP camera viewing to the remote as well so there goes another app, as a guy that is into the whole home automation this is the way to go 1 app controls them all!
