I am having power interruptions from weather and am considering adding an UPS unit to my cable modem, router and ISY. Do all UPS units have surge protection or other circuitry that will block or attenuate PLC? Thx Brian Link to comment
LeeG Posted June 13, 2012 Share Posted June 13, 2012 There is no issue putting the ISY itself on a UPS. The PLM should not be powered from any outlet on the UPS. The powerline signals will be attenuated to the point of not being reliable. The UPS itself should be plugged into a FilterLinc along with any other PC gear on the same circuit as the PLM. apostolakisl Posted June 13, 2012 Share Posted June 13, 2012 The only thing, however, is that if the ISY does not go down with a power outage, it won't know that there was a power outage, and any run on startup programs or catchup programs won't run. Remembering, of course, that all of the stuff ISY is controlling (probably) is going to shut off when the power goes out. Link to comment
Brian H Posted June 14, 2012 Share Posted June 14, 2012 I have my PLM in the pass through outlet on the front of a FilterLinc that has my UPS in the filtered outlet. I had also thought of the Run At Startup being missed if no power loss was detected and may have to myself. As I just moved my ISY994i's power to a UPS controlled connection. One thing to think about. If you have a recent ApplianceLinc or Icon On/Off module and it should be On. They now default to Off even if they where On at power loss. A Run at Startup would not know to turn it back On. Link to comment
apostolakisl Posted June 14, 2012 Share Posted June 14, 2012 The appliance linc would turn on if you had in a program setting it on and the program was "true" at startup. Like if it were supposed to be on between two times and the start happened between those two times. If you wanted it to revert to its last state, you would have to have a variable track its state and have the run at startup program set the on/off status according to the state. Link to comment

This valuable tid bit provided by Brian H is extremely important for those using their Appliance Linc devices to control mission critical loads. I personally have both versions in use. As some devices I want the *Fail Safe* while others I want the *Fail Secure* to be deployed during a power interruption. There are instances where you do not want something to be powered back up during a electrical disaster event. Case in point my washer is tied into a water detection system. If it detects the presence of water it will shut off the power to the washer. In the same breath, should there be a lightning storm and the power goes out. This added benefit of the Appliance Linc will provide another level of protection against an electrical surge entering the device. This is just one of three fail safes I have in place to ensure specific devices are well protected against power events. Teken . . . Link to comment

Brian H Posted June 14, 2012 Share Posted June 14, 2012 I don't believe it ever worked OK. It went on indefinite hold years ago. They did have a work around that I didn't like. Set the On level to 0% So it was at 0% if it went On. Also had mounting limitations. I believe it was base down so air could flow through the air vents in the body. I believe the manual links on the page still work if you are curious as to how it worked. The present manual had the work around in it. I have an archive of the original before changes.
