Can't add devices for initial setup with ISY

Hi,

Just bought new equipment for an initial setup. Using an ISY99ir with a Insteon PLM. I am able to connect to the ISY from my browser and was able to set the time zone, so I know I am communicating with it. However I have tried to add a motion sensor and a plug in lamp module and cannot get either of them to link to the ISY. I put the motion sensor into "pairing" mode while the add device dialog is up in the ISY admin console, but the sensor never shows up in the console panel as the directions indicate. same result with the lamp module. Any help?

The Motion Sensor requires a Dual Band device for RF communication. Is the Motion Sensor within range of a Dual Band device?

The LampLinc could be on the opposite 120V leg from the PLM. Are there two Dual Band devices installed for coupling?

The Motion Sensor and LampLinc are very likely I2CS devices. What level ISY firmware is being used? Click Help | About to show the ISY Firmware level and the UI (Admin Console) level.

The PLM I am using is a 2413S, which says it is a Dual-Band device. Isn't that all I need for the Motion Sensor? I am five feet from it when I am trying to connect.

Good point on the Lamplinc. I will try another plug, perhaps even the same one as the PLM to see if that works.

Yes, the motion sensor within 5' of the 2413 PLM should be fine.

What did Help | About indicate as the ISY Firmware and UI levels?

The Motion Sensor and LampLinc modules being shipped since March are I2CS devices which require 3.2.6

Did you run the 4 tap Set button test between the LampLinc and PLM?

That is necessary to insure each is in RF range of the other.

Checked the firmware and UI and both were outdated. Thought I had found the problem. Updated both to 3.2.6. Reboot, but still no good. Can't connect the motion sensor, the lamp dimmer or another lamp dimmer that I bought. This is getting very frustrating.

I have seen the 4-tap test mentioned in several places but I can't find anything that says what is actually is and how to do it. Any help on this one?

I notice there is a "set" button on the PLM, but I can't find anything on the SmartHome or the UDI docs or forums about how that button is used. Do I need to add the PLM as a device before I can use it, which might explain why none of my other Insteon devices can link?

No the PLM does not have to be added to the ISY setup.

On the 2413S PLM the button is used for the four tap communications tests.

See the Using the PowerLinc Modem as a Phase Detector section of the 2413S Quick Start Guide.

In a standalone setup with no ISY device it can be used for a factory reset.

In the diagnostics tests Does the PLM info test show it is connected to the ISY99i?

You don't have the PLM connected to a filtered power strip or UPS do you?

In the same outlet as the computer equipment?

Run Help | About again. Verify that both Firmware and UI lines now indicate 3.2.6. If not clear the Java cache and check the URL that is being used to invoke the Admin Console. It is possible to install 3.2.6 on the ISY but still run an older level of the Admin Console (UI) which will prevent the device types you are currently trying to add from adding correctly.

As Brian said the PLM is automatically known to the ISY because it is attached to the Serial Port A connection. The Tools | Diagnostics | PLM Info/Status will confirm the PLM is Connected.

If running Kaspersky or Avast disable them for now.

If the Firmware and UI both show 3.2.6 and the PLM shows Connected, run Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer with Level 3 selected (this is most important selection). Click Link Management | New INSTEON Device, enter the Insteon Address of the Motion Sensor, a Name. leave Device Type set to Auto Discover. Put the Motion Sensor into linking mode by pressing Motion Sensor Set button for 4-5 seconds. Motion Sensor Red LED will blink continuously. Click Ok on New INSTEON Device. The Event Viewer will trace the command activity associated with adding the Motion Sensor. When the process is done, Progress Bar is gone and it says Ready in lower left corner of Admin Console window, save the Event Viewer file and copy/paste file to the forum.

Guys - Appreciate all the tips

Check the firmware again and both show 3.2.6

Ran PLM status and it shows as connected.

How do I find the Insteon Address of the motion detector. The website says it is in the battery compartment, but I don't see anything in there. Honestly, I don't know what the format of an Insteon address is, so not sure what to look for. There is a sticker on the back of the detector that has two lines:

1312 REV:2.2

14.BF.92

Is the second line by any chance the Insteon address?

Also, the dual band lamp dimmer I received shows no lights when I plug it in to a live outlet. Is it likely DOA?

The manual says the LED should be either red or green. I got squat.

You guys are awesome. I guessed that the 14:BF.92 was the Insteon address and followed your instruction. Worked like a charm. Now have my first Insteon device showing up in the Admin console. Thank you.

The motion sensor address is 14.BF.92, entered in the address field of New INSTEON Address in that format xx.xx.xx

The LED on the LampLinc might be very dim. Press the Up/Down arrows on the side of the LampLinc to cycle on and off.

Just saw the last post. Great success. The LampLinc will have a similar label with the Insteon address of the LampLinc. Try adding the LampLinc the same way as the Motion Sensor except the LampLinc does not have to manually go into linking. Only battery devices must be put into linking mode before adding to the ISY.
