brookbphx Posted September 23, 2012 Share Posted September 23, 2012 Technical Details - and steps to get around this problem if you find yourself with the same problem Based on all of Lee's and Michel's great comments, I've learned some things. There are still some things I don't know about WHY things don't work right. But I have got a workaround figured out, and I would expect it would work for others. STEP 1) Factory Reset - Start out by factory resetting the 2477SA1. One thing I figured out is that factory reset for the latest versions of the 2477SA1 do NOT match what is in the manual. The manual says: 4) While holding down the Set button on 240V Load Controller, re-enable power to the junction box fromthe circuit breaker or fuse panel, making sure not to let go of the Set button 240V Load Controller will beep 5) Continue to hold down the Set button for 3 seconds and then release A few seconds after you release the button, 240V Load Controller will double-beep and its Status LED will turn on solid green The load will turn on However, on my 2477SA1, you've got to replace Step 5 with: Continue to hold down the Set button until the unit quits beeping. This could be 10 seconds or more. STEP 2 - Set for Automatic i2 Insteon messaging - In the ISY console, the Insteon command set can be set to either "Automatic", "Device Reported", or "i1 Only". See Link Management -> Advanced Options. Set it to Automatic or Device Reported for this set, and be sure to put it back to this setting when all is done. STEP 3 - Program normally in i2 mode - Add the device as you would any other device using the New Insteon Device or Start Linking options. You may want to have the Event Viewer up at Level 3 to watch what happens (and compare to the log below). If your 2477SA1 has the same problem as mine, this effort will fail. The Event Log will show "NACK" errors (Negative acknowledgement) towards the end. However, good things have been happening anyway. The commands sent have been programming a valid link into the 2477SA1 so that it can communicate with the ISY. It just won't communicate yet, because of the NACK error. A failure to communicate popup will pop up, and then the device will have a big red exclamation point next to it. The device won't communicate. The log below shows the event viewer log from when I did this. Mode - Set Link Management -> Advanced Options to i1 Only mode. You will get a warning. This warning sounds scary, but as long as you set this option back to Automatic or Device Reported later on, you'll be OK. STEP 5 - Restore 2477SA1 programming in i1 Mode - Right-click on the device and select "Restore Device". Then right-click on the device and select "Write Updates to Device". Event Viewer, if its up, should show a lot of commands being sent to the device. Most of them are i1 commands, but for some reason, there are some i2cs commands mixed in as well. You may even see a NAK or two. But in most cases this will work, and the big red exclamation point should go away. If it doesn't, try again. with On/Off commands from the ISY. Try it out. STEP 6 - Set back to Automatic i2 Insteon messaging - Set Link Management -> Advanced Options. to Automatic or Device Reported. STEP 7 - Query Device Links - At this point, your device may be programmed completely correctly, or it may have a link error on it. Check it out by right clicking on the device and selecting Diagnostics -> Show Device Link Table. The ISY will query the device in i2 mode, and get back the list of links that have been programmed. Then, to see how well the links match what the ISY thinks they should be, click on 'Compare' at the bottom of the links table that popped up. At this point, there really should only be 1 link, followed by a link row of all zeroes. But in my case that wasn't the case. Below is a screen grab of my device links table after the compare that shows a 'bad' link labeled as "Record Mismatch" at 0x0FF0. That will create additional links for the 2477SA1, and will overwrite the bad link. It seems that its OK to add links in i2 mode. The only thing required for i1 mode is Restoring and re-writing the program for the whole device. In my case, I had a scene with 7 controllers on a single keypadlinc, and I added the 2477SA1 to that scene. I then set the device to "OFF" for buttons B, D, F, and H, and left it at "ON" for C, E, and G. I didn't have "Automatically Write Changes" turned on when I made these edits to the scene. I turned that on after making all the edits so that it would update the device. Right click on the device and selecting Diagnostics -> Show Device Link Table. The ISY will query the device in i2 mode, and get back the list of links that have been programmed. Then, to see how well the links match what the ISY thinks they should be, click on 'Compare' at the bottom of the links table that popped up. At this point, you should show additional links, and if it works the way it did for me, they should all be valid links (indicated as "Identical"). The reason the sequence works is the original Automatic device add wrote an End Of List 00-00 link record in slot 2. The must be wiping out the authorization link in slot 1. The Restore device recognizes the Load Controller as an I2CS device that has lost its authorization link and restores the link record in slot 1 just as was done in the Automatic device add pass. The difference is ISY switches to I1 using Peek/Poke which always fail but the effort to write the End Of List record using I1 Peek/Poke failed so the authorization link in slot 1 is not wiped out. Once the device has been Restored the needed authorization link adding the Load Controller to Scenes works because the authorization link in slot 1 exists and the End Of List link record write using I1 Peek/Poke failed so the authorization link was not wiped out. Doing a Restore Device in Automatic mode might have also worked because there is one more link record written during the restore so even if the write of the End Of List record wipes out one link record the other link record will function as the needed authorization link. This diagnostic sequence clearly shows a problem with the Load Controller firmware. Link to comment

And do you think there's any chance Smarthome will swap out my 'bad' 2477SA1 at no cost in a few months after they've fixed the firmware bug, while letting me keep the bad 2477SA1 now? Even though I've figured out a workaround, I'd really rather have a unit without the bug in it. Same goes for those 2486D units I've been talking about in another thread if they turn out to have a bug as well. Note: I'm going to go ahead and send back the second 2477SA1 I got, which is the one that was used for the above troubleshooting. Even if you paid $200 for a developer subscription an additional fee is charged for individual assistance. Plus you would have to sign an NDA agreement which prevents sharing the useful information with us mere mortals. Contact the Smarthome Gold Line and see what they say. If you don't get the answer you want wait a day or two and try again. It often depends on which support person you talk to. Link to comment

It may work well for some situations, but not for others. Here's my interpretations of what I've heard from Lee and Michel and from what I've been seeing with my 2477SA1. Perhaps Lee or Michel can chime in if they think I've got it wrong. It turns out that when you first link the ISY to the 2477SA1 in i2 mode, it writes link #0, which is very important. Later in the initial linking sequence, a NACK occurs that shouldn't occur. This causes the overall linking process to fail, but that first link is in place, which is good because it's needed later. Later, after you do the i1 restore mentioned in my workaround above, you can put the ISY back in i2 mode and successfully communicate with the 2477SA1, because that first link is in place. You can add the 2477SA1 to scenes, and update the links in i2 mode. This will often work out well. However, if you add the 2477SA1 to some other scenes, and the ISY decides to rearrange the links in the link list, you may be in trouble. Apparently Link #0 cannot be re-written without removing the 2477SA1 from the ISY and re-linking it. So as long as your ISY scenes always leave the link #0 intact in the first link position, you're OK. But if it moves that link to another position in the list, you are in trouble. When Link #0 is created when you first link a 2477SA1 to an ISY, the ISY's PLM will always be the first link. You can verify this by looking at your Device Links before adding the device to any scenes. But as you add the 2477SA1 to other scenes, the ISY apparently may choose to rearrange the order links. I'm not sure why. If order isn't important, perhaps they can change the code so that link #0 never moves. Anyway, attached is a screen shot of my ISY and Device links for my 2477SA1. This is from after adding the 2477SA1 to a couple of scenes on a Keypadlinc. My ISY's PLM is 13.21.82, while the Keypadlinc is 1C,8B.20. Notice how link #0 on the left is linking the 2477SA1 to the Keypadlinc (1C.8B.20). However, over on the right side there is a record mismatch in that first position. Link #0 on the right shows a link to the ISY's PLM (13.21.82). That is the original link that was created when the 2477SA1 was first linked to the ISY. You can see the same line at link #3. The ISY apparently rearranged the links and moved what was originally at Link #0 to Link #3. But the 2477SA1 wouldn't overwrite the old Link #0 with the new Link #0 for 1C.8B.20. So control was lost, and I now get errors when trying to communicate with the 2477SA1. . . . It seems to me that if linking Insteon controllers to the 2477SA1 were this problematic in general, Smarthome would never get away with a bug like this. It does seem to be a bug, but perhaps the Smarthome folks know a workaround in the way they do the linking to THEIR controllers that avoids this bug. And perhaps the ISY guys aren't privy to the SmartHome workaround. I'm sure what ISY is doing *SHOULD* work if the 2477SA1 bug wasn't there, but a few of us have found that it doesn't. I'm wondering if it might be worthwhile for the ISY folks to 'reverse engineer' what the SmartHome controllers (such as a SmartLinc or HouseLinc) do when they link to a 2477SA1. Perhaps doing things in a different order or responding to ACKs and NAKs in a different way might provide a software workaround to the problem. I'm hoping for the best, but at this point, I'm thinking about returning all of the 2477SA1s, or possibly using them in X10 mode. I was trying to get away from that. But I've only got a couple of weeks left to return them before I get stuck with them. Any thoughts or comments appreciated! ---- PS: after 'previewing' the above before clicking "Submit", I saw that Michel had responded to my previous post before I could get this one out. accurate8 Posted October 11, 2012 Share Posted October 11, 2012 This is kind of in the same subject matter and was wondering if anyone could give me some input to my problem. I just installed a 2477SA1 load controller and I can link up to it and control it on and off in my admin console but, all my other devices started losing communication and I would get the red exclamation point next to them. I cut the power to the 2477SA1 at the breaker panel and would query my devices in the admin console and was able to get them back on line. Turn the breaker back on and get the same issue, able to control the 2477SA1 and lose my other devices. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. Link to comment

I think the problem with your setup is that perhaps you have a load connected to the load controller that causes major noise and thus kills all INSTEON signals. accurate8 Posted October 11, 2012 Share Posted October 11, 2012 Thanks for the advice. I will disconnect the load wires cap them and trigger the controller to see if it is noise. What I do know is, when the controller is in the on or off position supplying a load or not I am losing my INSTEON signals. I am using this device at my business to control a 220V 20Amp blower motor. The building is 3-phase and the controller has an active phase repeater built in for INSTEON signals. The phase repeater is only switching between two of the three phases. Throwing the breaker fixes the problem. My thought is the repeater doesn’t work when the breaker is off….. Maybe this controller is not compatible with 3-phase buildings? To me, it looks like this relay controller is a crapshoot at best. I have been reading a lot of things about it some good and some bad. It seems that there have been more than enough problems going around with it to steer clear. I hooked up an Elk Heavy Duty Relay #72800 to control my 220V 50Amp compressor and it works flawlessly! Well, that was until I hooked up the 2477SA1. The Elk is around 80 bucks and is controlled with any type of 110V OutletLinc, ApplianceLinc or In-lineLinc. Maybe this is an option for those of you struggling with the 2477SA1. If I can’t fix this soon I am going to get another Elk and move on with peace of mind that my system is trouble free. I'm pretty sure that load controller is not meant to be connected to 2 phases of a 3 phase supply. That would only produce something like 208V if I remember correctly and the phases will not be 180 degrees apart. I think a call to the Smarthome Gold Line is in order as I don't think the device can be connected as it is now. Link to comment
accurate8 Posted October 11, 2012 Share Posted October 11, 2012 The service to the building is 3-Phase; the controller itself is hooked up to a standard 220V 20Amp circuit. In order to get all my INSTEON devices to work properly with my 3-Phase building, I had to use three access points connected on all three phases in the building. Sense the 2477SA1 is also an active phase repeater my thought was it was interfering with my other devices. I plan on calling tech support later today but the relay is connected correctly. LeeG Posted October 11, 2012 Share Posted October 11, 2012 Connecting 120V Access Points to each individual phase is not same as connecting the 240v Load Controller across two of the three phases of a 3 phase service. The Load Controller has no Neutral connection so it is a true 220/240V device. It also is expecting the two 120v legs to be 180 degrees apart which is not true across 2 phases of a 3 phase service. I expect Smarthome will indicate the Load Controller is not meant to be connected to a 3 phase service. Please post the results of the Smarthome call so we call all benefit. Thanks Link to comment

They are replacing the device assuming that the first one is defective. I am not optimistic of the outcome because I agree with your theory on what is happening here. He did state the sense the controller is dual band and communicates via RF there should not be this kind of interference with the other devices. We will see…. Link to comment
