jmed999 Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Yesterday I set up the ISY9941 and an access point with a lamplinc. I got everything running and even ran my first program. With lots of help from this forum everything was running smoothly. SO today I go to my bookmarked link "my ip/admin" and Google Chrome is giving me the following error, "Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to my ip". I'm not sure what has happened. I went from everything running flawlessly to not being able to connect. Nothing has changed so I'm confused. ANy ideas what happened? BTW, I'm running 3.2.6 Thanks!
jmed999 Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 I just tried rebooting my computer, the PLM and the ISY9941. I was hoping that would help but it didn't. I do remember yesterday while rebooting my computer a window popped up that said something about a conflicting IP address. Not sure if that has anything to do with this or not.
LeeG Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Could be multiple devices trying to use the same IP address. Is the ISY configured for a static IP? Check the router to see what devices have been assigned what IP address.
jmed999 Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 I just tried going to http://www.universal-devices.com/99i. The Admin Console did appear but an error came up saying, "XML Parse Error IP/desc". The thing is that IP is only one number off from my IP I was using yesterday. I hope this help determine what the problem is. Thanks!
jmed999 Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 Could be multiple devices trying to use the same IP address. Is the ISY configured for a static IP? Check the router to see what devices have been assigned what IP address. How do I do that?
LeeG Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 You can also try http://www.universal-devices.com/99i/admin.jnlp which will display a popup window Insteon Finder which will have the IP address of the ISY. The Insteon Finder window may be under other windows. Minimize each active window until the Insteon Finder winder is visible. It sure sounds like the IP configuration is in conflict.
jmed999 Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 I see the Insteon finder window but it is blank.
LeeG Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 I do not have the network skills to guide you through logging on to whatever modem/router you are using.
jmed999 Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 The router says it is currently set up for "a dynamic IP (via DHCP)" Does that help? Is that good?
LeeG Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 It should identify the IP address assigned to each device on the LAN. Since the PC indicated a conflict when rebooted the conflict could be between the ISY and the PC. Either way the IP address assigned to the ISY should be indicated.
jmed999 Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 I can't find the IP assigned to the ISY. I can't get into admin console so I can't go to help - about. How do I get ISYs IP addy?
jmed999 Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 Now when I go to http://www.universal-devices.com/99i I get the following errors... "Socket Open Failed Java.net.ConnectException: Connection Refused: No further information" "XML Parse error ip addy" Not sure was has gone wrong here.
jmed999 Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 Ok. I found my ISY IP addy with in the router settings. When I go to http://isy IP addy it just says "Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to ISY IP"
LeeG Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 I think the ISY has been assigned an IP address different from that initially. It probably conflicted with the PC IP address which is why the error popup when the PC was rebooted. You could try other nearby IP addresses. For example, if using http://192.168.2.5/ try http://192.168.2.3/, http://192.168.2.4/, http://192.168.2.6/, http://192.168.2.7/. If the ISY was configured with a static IP which has been assigned to another device on the network the ISY will not be reachable. I suggest opening a Ticket with UDI tech support so they can resolve the configuration conflict.
jmed999 Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 Yeah the ISY IP address as show in my router's DHCP list is different than it was yesterday. If I know the ISY's IP address then why would I try the ones close to it? I didn't configure the ISY to a static IP address should I have?
jmed999 Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 I rebooted the modem, router, PLM and the ISY and now http://www.universal-devices.com/99i works so I went to Help - about and the ISY IP has changed again. I then changed my url to reflect the new Ip address and it worked. So I'm connected. I'm just wondering how to get it to not do this again. Do I need to set it to a static IP address? If so what are the pros and cons of doing this? Thanks!
LeeG Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 If all the devices on the LAN were setup for DHCP there would not be a conflict. The ISY IP might change but things would be functional. The error popup when the PC was rebooted tells me the network has a conflict which must be resolved. Perhaps the PC has a fixed address that was fine until the ISY was added and now the router is assigning a valid DHCP address that now conflicts with something else like the PC. I do not know enough about this to give good advice on solution except that there is a problem that will very likely surface again until the network conflict is resolved. I have run with DHCP for 3+ years with no problem so I don't think a static IP is an absolute but again I'm not the expert.
jmed999 Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 Looks like I have everything working now. I set the isy to a static IP. Thanks for your help. It took a while but I got it figured out
LeeG Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Make sure the static IP address is outside the router DHCP range. Otherwise the conflict could happen in the future as additional equipment is added that uses DHCP.
Michel Kohanim Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Hello jmed999, Just responded to your ticket. LeeG, thanks so very much for all the help. With kind regards, Michel
