stillen_i30 Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 So a few weeks ago I posted about a few devices that started acting cookey on my otherwise previously stable network. This problem has gotten worse with many more devices not responding, scenes not working properly or programs not executing devices. The problems all seemed to have started when I purchased a few new switches for my network. I replaced 1 or 2 switches with different insteon switches (for example, takin out a dualband switchlinc in place of a new non dual band kpl and putting the dualband switchlinc onto another non insteon switch, effectively making the network larger). I have upwards of 40 devices, 16 of the currently being dualband. I've almost never had any unreliability before adding these new recent switches. I tried some of the suggested tests like scene test. In particular I have a scene with a few outside lights turned on by a kpl button. Now what happens is if I press that kpl button to start the scene, the lights turn on and then immediately turn off. Also, I have lights that simply do not turn on random nights but other nights do turn on. I even had a device delete itself from one of my scenes without me knowing it. I relocated my plm and isy to another outlet more centrally but no difference. Any ideas of what's goin on and how to fix this?
oberkc Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 My initial reaction, given that you have removed two dual-band devices is a concern about whether you have lost communication between the legs of your electrical system. While I know you have other dual-band devices, have you taken positive steps to confirm proper communication? Also, I wonder about how you "replaced" the old devices. Did you first remove them from you ISY? Is is possible that there remain electronic link records of these old switches in the remaining devices, and that the remaining devices continue to try to communicate with the now-missing switches?
stillen_i30 Posted September 13, 2012 Author Posted September 13, 2012 The dual band devices were replaced in other locations. I did the 4 quick set button taps and saw many of my dual band only devices flashing. It is the same as it was prior to switching some devices. I'm suspecting a link issue. When replacing devices, each one was removed from isy then relinked using option 1 (remove all links). The kpl that is acting funny with a particular scene was never touched (nor were any of the lights the scene controls), but when I compared links between device and isy there were 3 mismatches. I tried device restore but I still have mismatches (and fewer total links listed).
LeeG Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 If the link database does not match after a Restore Device either the KeypadLinc is defective or there is a comm problem that prevented the complete restoration of the link records. Can you post the results of the Compare? Try a right click on the KeypadLinc Primary node and select Write Updates to Device. If a comm problem stopped the Restore Device the remaining activity may still be queued.
LeeG Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 stillen_i30 A Dual Band device blinking does not by itself indicate on opposite 120v legs which is what is necessary for phase coupling. All my Dual Band devices in the test bed blink with the 4 tap test but they are all on the same circuit (same 120v leg). The blinking only indicates receiving an RF signal, not that the RF signal is on the opposite 120v leg. For example, the 6 button Dual Band KPL blinks the 4 secondary buttons when receiving the RF signal from a device on the same 120v leg. When receiving an RF signal from a device on the opposite 120v leg the ON button turns On and Off, the 4 secondary buttons do not blink. The device specific Dual Band User Guide should describe the difference in response to an RF signal on the same 120v leg versus the opposite 120v leg. If that information is not in the User Guide contact the Smarthome Gold Line support line for information.
