cranrob Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 OK, here is the log as instructed: - Rear Pots (KPL) - 1D.FD.B1 - Rear Chandelier (TL) - 1D.05.1B - Front Pots (TL) - 1D.05.25 - Front Chandelier (TL) - 1D.04.27 When I started, all 4 were in one scene. The Front Chandelier could not be communicated to by the ISY, so I deleted it from the ISY (which also removed it from scene), did a factory reset on it, and added it back, but did not put it back in scene. Then, I airgapped all but the Rear Pots (KPL). Then, Turned it on and off a few times from admin console Wed 01/09/2013 09:18:13 PM : [iNST-TX-I1 ] 02 62 1D FD B1 0F 11 7FWed 01/09/2013 09:18:13 PM : [iNST-ACK ] 02 62 1D.FD.B1 0F 11 7F 06 LTONRR cranrob Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 By the way, the ONLY thing on that circuit are the 4 insteon devices, and it's about a 25 foot run from the electrical panel.
LeeG Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 The Rear Pots (KPL) 1D FD B1 has excellent communication when it is the only device powered. The Rear Chandelier (TL) 1D 05 1B has excellent communication when the KPL and the Rear Chandelier (TL) are the only devices powered. “Next, the Front Chandelier (TL) - you can see things start to go bad here:†I don’t see what is being referred to as “bad hereâ€. Actually the communication with the Front Chandelier (TL) 1D 04 27 is excellent. I take it at this point the KPL, the Rear Chandelier and the Front Chandelier are powered at this point. “Finally, the Front Pots, and things get worse:†I agree. At this point communication with Front Pots (TL) 1D.05.25 is very bad. “Then, just for fun, I turn the rear pots on and off a few times - note the difference from the first time:†At this point communication with the Front Chandelier (TL) 1D 04 27 continues to be excellent. When the Scene update activity switches to Rear Posts (KPL) 1D FD B1 communication with this device is bad. ****************************** Communication with Rear Pots (KPL) 1D FD B1, The Rear Chandelier (TL) 1D 05 1B, and Front Chandelier (TL) 1D 04 27 is excellent when these three devices are powered. When power is applied to Front Pots (TL) 1D.05.25 communication with Front Chandelier (TL) 1D 04 27 continues to be excellent. Communication with Front Chandelier (TL) 1D 04 27 and Front Pots (TL) 1D.05.25 is bad. I find it difficult to explain how communication with three devices in the same box powered from the same circuit breaker is excellent until the fourth device is powered. If communication was getting progressively worse as each additional switch is powered there should have been a decline in reliability as each additional switch was supplied powered. Instead communication is great until the fourth device is powered. I suspect something in the way the forth switch Front Pots (TL) 1D.05.25 is wired, its connections or the device itself. Since Front Chandelier (TL) 1D 04 27 continues to have excellent communication even with Front Pots (TL) 1D.05.25 powered I would look at how power is supplied to each of the devices.
arw01 Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 What are the light bulbs themselves in each of these fixtures? If they are not regular incandescent bulbs, swap the front troublesome fixture lights into another fixture and see if the problem moves, or just put regular bulbs in there as a test to see if things improve. I used to have a CFL that would cause a keypad that controlled it and a lamplinc down the circuit to "reboot" whenever it was turned on. The KPL and lamplic just went completely dark for a couple of seconds, then came back on and were fine. Took that CFL out, but it in another fixture, also insteon controlled via a lamplinc and never had another problem!
Brian H Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 CFL's should not be used with any module that can dim. Unless specifically marked as dimmable and then it can still be a touchy situation.
ELA Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 I shouldn't have to do that - if even one device on the circuit is getting commands reliably, the others should be as well (due to the fact they are on the same circuit, and the other devices on the circuit repeat the command). I find it interesting that when I "air-gap" a couple of the devices, the active ones behave correctly. I believe this points to interference being produced by the devices themselves. Hello cranrob, I was initially surprised when I had issues and felt as you do that " I shouldn't have to do that". Unfortunately Insteon has issues that result in some people having to spent lots of hours fine tuning their installs to get a reliable system. I have posted a few times on a similar situation in my living room with 11 devices. The 11 devices all in one room represents a very large load and the initial send signal level becomes quite low. In my room that initial level is still high enough ( according to Insteon specs) to be received yet a couple of devices did not receive it. According to Insteon theory all those devices that did receive will retransmit ( simulcast) and thus the devices that did not receive the initial send "should" receive hops 1,2 or 3. In my experience they sometimes do not, even though the signal strength may be several volts. Several of us here have discussed this in the past. My opinion is one of two things: Either some devices just do not simulcast very well and thus the combined signals are corrupted. Or a device tried too hard reaching into the noise floor to receive the initial send and gets confused such that it then ignores the subsequent hops. There are many factors that can affect this situation and there are ways around it if you work at it long enough. Not to exclude a possible bad device you might try the same test you did for LeeG but in the reverse order. With the suspected device on-line first. Sorry if I missed it but have you listed any and all equipment that may be plugged into this circuit, especially those ahead of the suspect 3 gang? It sounds like your signal levels are always low. Then as you add devices you get too low. Not all devices will receive or transmit at exactly the same amplitude so some devices may tend to drop off before others. You say there is 25 ft from the service to this 3 gang. How far is the PLM from the service and what equipment is plugged into that circuit either near to or between the PLM and the service? Assuming it is a signal strength issue you need to boost the initial sends signal strength to these devices by eliminating any signal suckers on either the PLM or the 3 gang circuits. Another possible solution has been mentioned on the forum a few times where people have isolated the power line section of the 2413S PLM with a filter to force it to use RF only on the initial send. That might be worth a try as long as you have access points or other dual band devices to translate and repeat the signal. Best of Luck to you
IndyMike Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Hello cranrob, Thank you for the replies. I sincerely hope we have not frustrated you into submission - we are trying to help. Lee alluded to the fact that you had previously posted over on the Smarthome forum. I searched and was unable to locate that post. If you (or Lee) could provide a link, it might prevent us from re-covering old ground. Summarizing my understanding of your current install: [*:2k9udh5r]2413S PLM (dual-band serial) plugged in near the main panel. On the same phase as the problem circuit[*:2k9udh5r]4 Insteon units (1-KPL, 3- TL) in a quad box all connected to incandescent loads. Quad box ~25' from main panel.[*:2k9udh5r]2 Accesspoints on opposite phases[*:2k9udh5r]"Some" X10 devices that are reliably controlled via the ISY. Questions: [*:2k9udh5r]Do you have any X10 repeaters, couplers, or Boosters installed? Boosterlincs/Booserlinc enabled devices are particularly problematic. If you have a repeater (most are OK) or coupler installed, please post Make/Model.[*:2k9udh5r]Are the Insteon devices above the only devices installed (i.e. PLM, 3-TL, 1-KPL, 2-ACP)?[*:2k9udh5r]Earlier in the thread you had a misunderstanding of the phase layout of the main panel. Are you now sure that your accesspoints are on opposite phases?[*:2k9udh5r]You mentioned that the installed wattage of your Chandeliers is 160W. What is the installed wattage on your can lights?[*:2k9udh5r]Are the can lights thermally protected? Observations: Things in your event trace that I don't understand 1) Rear Pots log (KPL) Most of this appears to be good communication, except for the "unsolicited echo" that I've highlighted in Red. I have never seen this in my system. If I understood your configuration correctly above, you have only the KPL, 2-ACP, and the PLM active at this point. If that is the case, the "echo" is presumably coming from one of the accesspoints. If your ACP are on opposite phases (verified as above), please pull them completely and re-try. - Rear Pots (KPL) - 1D.FD.B1 - Rear Chandelier (TL) - 1D.05.1B - Front Pots (TL) - 1D.05.25 - Front Chandelier (TL) - 1D.04.27 Then, I airgapped all but the Rear Pots (KPL). The dark red transmissions after the Nack's are an anomaly I've never seen. These are again unsolicited transmissions from the KPL that appear to be Ack's. I have no idea what would prompt the TL to transmit these in rapid succession. I'm dearly hoping that you have an X10 booster that is causing active interference. Short of that, it's possible that your Accesspoints are in a poor reception (powerline/rf) area and are repeating bad data (again, I haven't experienced this). Maybe Lee can make sense out of the above repeated ack's???
cranrob Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 Hello cranrob, Thank you for the replies. I sincerely hope we have not frustrated you into submission - we are trying to help. Lee alluded to the fact that you had previously posted over on the Smarthome forum. I searched and was unable to locate that post. If you (or Lee) could provide a link, it might prevent us from re-covering old ground. I have not posted over in the Smarthome forum. Summarizing my understanding of your current install: [*:34ffwl1k]2413S PLM (dual-band serial) plugged in near the main panel. On the same phase as the problem circuit[*:34ffwl1k]4 Insteon units (1-KPL, 3- TL) in a quad box all connected to incandescent loads. Quad box ~25' from main panel.[*:34ffwl1k]2 Accesspoints on opposite phases[*:34ffwl1k]"Some" X10 devices that are reliably controlled via the ISY. My PLM is an EZIComm Insteon PLM (no RF), not a Smarthome one. Everything else is correct. Questions: [*:34ffwl1k]Do you have any X10 repeaters, couplers, or Boosters installed? Boosterlincs/Booserlinc enabled devices are particularly problematic. If you have a repeater (most are OK) or coupler installed, please post Make/Model.[*:34ffwl1k]Are the Insteon devices above the only devices installed (i.e. PLM, 3-TL, 1-KPL, 2-ACP)?[*:34ffwl1k]Earlier in the thread you had a misunderstanding of the phase layout of the main panel. Are you now sure that your accesspoints are on opposite phases?[*:34ffwl1k]You mentioned that the installed wattage of your Chandeliers is 160W. What is the installed wattage on your can lights?[*:34ffwl1k]Are the can lights thermally protected? [*:34ffwl1k]No X10 repeaters, couplers, or boosters - just X10 switches.[*:34ffwl1k]Access points are on opposite phases, tested with "4-tap" method[*:34ffwl1k]Rear chandelier is 4 40w bulbs, so 160w. Front chandelier is 12 40W bulbs, so 480w.[*:34ffwl1k]Can lights - rear set is 4x60W = 240W. Front set is 7x60W = 420W.[*:34ffwl1k]The can lights are new - installed in last few months. I don't know if they are thermally protected or not. I got the ACPs last week. I was trying this without them previously. Without them, I was getting the "Failed Writing" message that I started this thread with.
cranrob Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 Here's something (not sure if it helps). Just tried turning front chandelier on and off several times from admin console, which only actually turned the load on/off a couple of times (most failed). LeeG Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 I’ll break this down into comments by device. Device 1D.04.27 is participating in the Scene update process. This sequence is writing the End Of List link record at 0FD8-0FDF. It is successful. Wed 01/09/2013 09:22:25 PM : [iNST-TX-I2CS] 02 62 1D 04 27 1F 2F 00 00 02 0F DF 08 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 D9 Wed 01/09/2013 09:22:25 PM : [iNST-ACK ] 02 62 1D.04.27 1F 2F 00 00 02 0F DF 08 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 D9 06 (00) Wed 01/09/2013 09:22:25 PM : [iNST-SRX ] 02 50 1D.04.27 19.BC.CE 2B 2F 00 (00) Wed 01/09/2013 09:22:25 PM : [std-Direct Ack] 1D.04.27-->ISY/PLM Group=0, Max Hops=3, Hops Left=2 This next sequence is reading the link record at 0FD0-0FD7 which is the space following the End Of List record just written successfully. The Extended response (02 51) that was marked in Red is somewhat strange in that it does not have the 0x01 in the byte following the data address. The ISY finds something in the response it does not like and issues the link record read again and gets the same response. It then writes a second End of List record that address and moves on to the next device. I have seen HouseLinc note a record like this as an error. Perhaps this is normal when attempting to read past the End Of List record of an I2CS device. Without the I2CS spec’s who knows. I do not attribute this to comm. issue being analyzed. LeeG Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 These trace entries for 1D.FD.B1 which is the device the ISY moved to during the Scene update process are bizarre to say the least. The ISY requests the link database start address by requesting a link record read of 0000. An I2CS device returns the link database start address with this request. The response back from the device has data that I cannot interpret. Byte D2 = 0x06 which I do not know what that means. Normally this is a 0x01 to indicate a read response. The link record address is F0FF which is wrong for a read response but since the response is a D2=0x06 perhaps this makes sense. The ISY took F0FF as the link database address and proceeded from there. This request is NAKed with a cmd2 = 0xFD which of course means something but why would SmartLabs want us to know. Sense some frustration here?! They look like duplicate 02 50 messages with different Hop counts which do appear at times from a Mesh network. I am concerned at this point that this device is not powered with good 120v power but that is speculation. The rest of these trace entries are not worth trying to analyze. Some have the bogus link database address from the bad (?) 0x06 response way back when the ISY asked for the link database start address. Again, I don’t think this device is responding correctly because of a power issue or it needs a factory reset.

LeeG Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Thanks, that is good. That EZIComm is functionally equivalent to a 2412S. It even identifies itself with a Cat/Subcat of a 2412S PLM.
Xathros Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 I find that interesting, as well. Not quite sure what to conclude from this. ELA has indicated in other posts that each Insteon device represents a load that attenuates signal simply by being on the line (Signal sucker in the amount of 1 standard Insteon load). Having marginal communications to a circuit and placing 5 insteon loads on it my drop the signal to the point where none of them can hear the command and repeat/act on it. Air gapping a few of them may reduce the load enough for the remaining devices to hear the command. -Xathros

This seems to go against the Insteon marketing materials: Unlike all other mesh networks, INSTEON's "mesh" network has every device acting as a repeater -- receiving and sending every message to all other devices on the network. So instead of stressing the network by adding more INSTEON devices, you actually strengthen it.

I agree however I do think it is possible to make things worse in some cases by adding more Insteon to a circuit. I believe I ran into this at my last house before I figured out that my bedroom TV was sucking signal like there was no tomorrow. I had 2 lamplinc dimmers that were working fine for the most part until I added an appliancelinc to control a window fan. Once I added the appliancelinc, comms got unpredictable on that circuit. If I removed any one of the three devices, the other two worked again. Once I put the TV and sat receiver on a filterlinc, that whole circuit recovered and all 3 devices worked like a charm. So again, I strongly believe that in very marginal conditions, adding more Insteon can make things worse rather than better. -Xathros
ELA Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 cranrob, Do not believe everything Smarthome advertizes. These forums are popular with people having communications issues. LeeG has interpreted a number of messages that do not make much sense. As he suggested have you tried a factory reset of your PLM and then a restore? If that does not help it would be curious to see how a different PLM performed. Not all of us have a "spare" PLM but they are nice to have around when you are having issues. In lieu of any further detail as what appliances/devices might be on the circuit (possible signal suckers) it is also possible that your PLM has a weak transmitter or some other defect.
LeeG Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 The problem I am having with all of this is device 1D 04 27 activity associated with the Scene update continues to have consistent Hops Left=2 communication. It is in the same box, same circuit, presumably in the same bundle of Black Line wires under the same wire nut as device 1D.FD.B1. Yet device 1D.FD.B1 communication has gone from consistent Hops Left=2 to trash. Hard to see how simple device loading allows device 1D 04 27 to continue to work well with consistent Hops Left=2 and device 1D.FD.B1 which was also working well with Hops Left=2 to go into the dumper when they are all connected to the same physical Line in the same box.
IndyMike Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Lee, Thank you for making sense out of the Extended message Scene Add log. Clearly I was way off the mark. I've updated my post to prevent mis-information. I agree that the differences in the communication between the two devices (TL very good, KPL bizarre) is screaming something at us. Just don't understand what it's screaming as yet.
LeeG Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 IM I agree completely that it is trying to tell us something but cannot put my finger on it. The install conditions and the results just do not seem to be explainable. The work you have done (and others) documenting with specific reproducible data how loading can affect the results has been superb. Maybe this is just another manifestation of multiple Insteon device loading. It just does not seem to fit. It is looking at traces like these that really brings home the lack of available doc to the public. If one could look at the specs and see that D2=06 means something specific or that it is not valid is the different between turning left or right for the next step. Some days!
IndyMike Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Hi cranrob, Thank you again for the responses. Unfortunately they always breed additional questions [*:3cqd97y3]No X10 repeaters, couplers, or boosters - just X10 switches. You indicated that you can communicate reliably to your x10 devices with the PLM. That's difficult to do without some sort of phase coupling (passive coupler, booster, or repeater). It is possible (unlikely) that all of your X10 devices are on the same phase. The problem here is that you moved the PLM to the opposite phase. That should have impacted your X10 communication unless you have a coupler. 1) What make/model X10 switches do you have? If Smarthome, they may have a built-in X10 booster (rather evil for Insteon). 2) Did you install the X10 yourself? If not, it's possible there is a coupler, repeater, or booster "hidden" somewhere in your system. I got the ACPs last week. I was trying this without them previously. Without them, I was getting the "Failed Writing" message that I started this thread with. If I understand the sequence correctly: 1) You initially had your PLM on the phase opposite your 4 insteon unit install. Without phase coupling you could not communicated with the Insteon units. 2) You installed the ACPs (established phase coupling) and things began to function somewhat. 3) You moved your PLM to the same phase as the 4 Insteon unit install. What we haven't established is whether the PLM can communicate with the 4 units, without the ACP's, when it's on the same phase. Like Lee, I am having trouble believing this is a simple signal absorption problem. If you pull the ACP's and can still communicate with your devices (no worse than before) we should start considering "other options". Lee brought up a possibility in his last post that we haven't specifically addressed: Are all of the 4 Insteon units tied to the same Power/neutral feed? It's not at all unusual to have multiple Power feeds in a quad box. It's also not unusual for them to be on opposite phases.
LeeG Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 From one of the initial posts on page 1 "The entire 4-gang switch box is served by a single circuit breaker."
ELA Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 I reviewed the logs and found one instance where the TL (1D 04 27) demonstrated poor communications. From that review it also looks to me like there should have been more time allotted between activations when testing. As we know poor communications with multiple retries can take a number of seconds to complete. Often times the log is only showing 1 - 2 seconds between. I do not find it all that strange that one device out of three in the same box can have issues when the others do not. That would be consistent with marginal communications and the fact that all devices have different transmit strengths and receive thresholds. Not saying different strength/thresholds explains everything in this case, but it is one possible explanation. I have done a lot of testing with multiple devices at one end of a cable and one transmitter at the other. I have used custom modified Filterlincs with different value capacitors in them. These serve as variable attenuators. I have always experienced that one device will begin to fail in communications before the others as the signal strength is lowered. I have always been amazed by what a abrupt cutoff there can be, the difference between good, 2 hops remaining communications, and poor - retries required Of course a signal strength measurement would sure be handy in this case to confirm whether or not the initial send is weak at arrival or even possibly at the sending end.
