Set static IP through Java console

I'd like to see the ability to provision a static IP address from the GUI. Shouldn't be that hard to implement.

I do agree but there's only one problem:

If you do it remotely, ISY would have to reboot, and you will not be able to log back in.

 

I guess we can put it under advanced configuration. Please let us think about the ramifications.

A similar method already applies when working with Linksys-type home-based internet routers. Not a big deal for most users.

 

However, I see where your concern is.. How to reset to the prev. IP address should something go wrong (wrong IP, subnet, GW, whatever).

 

Perhaps the following fail-safe can apply:

 

If an IP is changed from the GUI, and the ISY reboots (automatically, I'm assuming). AND there is NO login from the ADMIN user to the GUI under the new IP within lets say 5 mintues, the ISY would reboot automatically again and revert back to previous settings...

Your suggestion makes perfect sense and I am sure it will work. I am just worried about those cases that a) our documentation is not clear one does not know what the function does and c) one does not read whatever documentation we have. In all cases, we would have to spend a lot of effort/support calls just to get the system back up and running. When this function is in the shell, then some level of expertise is assumed; i.e. you do not venture into telnet unless you know something about telnet.

 

All this said, I think we should be able to provide this feature but we have to somehow hide it from average users. Just thinking how ...

My understanding was that CLI access was only though serial port. Telnet is possible now? I gotta try that. If the unit supports telnet / ssh, then problem solved. I think the serial method is a pain -- if it's the only method..

Yes, we support telnet on port 126.
