Strange behavior tonight; comm error

This is a strange comm error I just started getting. Its “cannot communicate with 20A2A51 Please check connections†when I try and turn ON or OFF multiple dimmers from the Admin Console. Below is the log. I queried the device just before I issued an OFF command. The query comes back fine. At 07:24:48 I issue the OFF command via the console. It logs “ERR 1†at 07:24:52 and I also get the “cannot communicate†popup. I acknowledge the popup and then the light turns off like I wanted and log then shows a “ERR 0â€. I’m using an isy994i on 3.3.10. From what I’ve read on here is seems like it’s not an interference issue since it seems to only need 1 hop to complete. It just seems like its timing out before I get a reply from the device but it eventually does reply back. I only have 4 switches and all 4 are doing this tonight. This is the first time I’ve had this behavior but I’ve only had the system for about a month.

When comm. is working there is good communication with 20.A2.A5. The Hops Left=2 is as good as it gets.

However, there are times when the device does not respond at all. A device Query was issued at 07:24:27 which got no response from the device. The next device Query at 07:24:36 worked and worked well (Hops Left=2).

 

EDIT: except there was a 3 second delay before the device responded to the Query which worked.

There is another case where there is several seconds before the device responds. There is 4 seconds between the device Off request and the response from the device. Since the response came back with a Hops Left=2 it would appear the delay was the PLM doing automatic retry because the device did not respond.

This is an unusual communication failure pattern. Check whether 20.A2.A5 is on the opposite 120v leg from the PLM. If so check the Access Points with the 4 tap Set button test to verify they are positioned and working correctly. Could be an issue with the PLM not transmitting intermittently. Difficult to say with this single example. See how communication is with a variety of devices. If a single device then the issue could be the device itself or the type of load it is driving. If the same pattern exists with multiple devices look for a pattern of same or opposite 120v legs to the PLM or perhaps the PLM itself.

No. For the same reason the devices do not exclusively use the powerline even though they all have access to it. Insteon is a Mesh network. Not all powerline only, not all RF only. There could be RF interference making the powerline more reliable than RF at any given point in time.

Hey guys, I shoulda mentioned this earlier but thanks for all your info. So I was checking the circuit and 1st thing I noticed is that I have a TV on the same circuit. I turned the TV off and it communicates quick with no issues. I flip it back on and the delays are back. So I'll need to do some research on these forums to see how to resolve this because moving the PLM and ISY from where it is now is not going to be very easy.

 

 

Any suggestions as to what circuit I should put the PLM on that wont cause interference? (Furnace, Hot water heater, etc. )

If a specific appliance has been found to adversely affect communication, particularly one as profound as this one, the solution that usually works is to isolate the TV with a FilterLinc.

 

I looked at that and if it works as advertised it will probably solve my problem EXCEPT the tv that is the problem is a wall mount with a small recessed power outlet so a filterlinc will not fit in there. Do they make a filter I can wire
