Power Outage

I have a 994i Pro and using MobiLinc Connect for remote access. Whenever a power outage occurs I lose remote access to the ISY. Remote access can only be restored by unplugging/plugging both the router and the ISY. The internet company modem has a battery backup built-in. I have the router also on a UPS/battery backup. The ISY is getting power via the PLM which is plugged directly into the wall outlet.

Any suggestions on how to set up the ISY so that it properly connects remotely after a power outage?

Some have placed both devices on a UPS via Filterlinc. This forces the PLM to only broadcast via RF and appears to work for those using this method.

I personally believe its best to have both modes of communications via power line and RF to ensure the most robust Insteon network.

My set up has the ISY protected by three different surge power conditioners, which is also powered via two different UPS systems. The PLM is protected by three layers of surge protectors in the home.

A Type 1 primary surge protector is installed at the service entrance meter. A Type 2 secondary surge protector at the service panel. Lastly, a Type 3 point of use surge alarm electrical outlet protectors the PLM.

Some highly sensitive electronic gear is bridged using SSR's and optical relays to provide 100% isolation and surge / lightning protection.

As stated some members have placed both of their ISY & PLM on a UPS to avoid any power outages.

The reality is what can these people control when there is no power?

My goal was only to protect both devices against electrical surge events not so much having the ability to control the Insteon network.

I highly suspect that your problem is related to DHCP and/or UPNP. When power is restored, the ISY boots quickly and looks for an IP address from your router which is not yet ready. A simple solution would be to set a static IP address in the ISY so that it is not depending on your router for this function. Once the modem and router have come online you should then be able to access your ISY from outside.

Hope this helps.

The only other suggestion I have would be to power the ISY with a 5v wall wart plugged into the UPS so that it doesn't go down when the PLM power goes out.

I have not represented the facts about the ISY power correctly. The ISY is getting power via the wall plug and the power adapter which comes with the 994i.

I was under the impression that I could not use the UPS backup as a power source for the ISY. Is this correct?

You can absolutely use a UPS to protect the ISY. That does not address the fact the PLM is not on a UPS.

I have my power supply for the ISY994i on my UPS.

PLM is on a unfiltered front outlet of a Filterlinc and the UPS on the filtered outlet of the FilterLinc. That way the UPS AC Input noise filter doesn't effect the signals.

The PLM can't be on an UPS because the power line Insteon and X10 signals will not pass through it and many also absorb signals on the power line side.

Unless you want to try and use Insteon RF only communications as mentioned earlier in the thread.
