I need to know how to correctly use this option in the "Context Menu."

 

I'm replacing a Switchlinc whose toggle off isn't working and going to use it elsewhere where I don't need a local toggle.

My thought is I can install the new Switchlinc in place without removing the dis-functional Switch from ISY, Link the new switch and then use "Replace" to change all links?

The new SwitchLinc can physically replace the defective SwitchLinc. The Replace xxxx.... does NOT send any commands to the old SwitchLinc.

 

1 Add the new SwitchLinc to the ISY using a dummy name.

2 Right click on old SwitchLinc node, select Replace xxxxx with .... which will display a list of potential replacement SwitchLincs. They must be the same type of device, Relay for Relay, Dimmer for Dimmer.

3 Select the new replacement SwitchLinc and click Ok.

 

When the Replace is done the old node name will remain but with the Insteon address of the new SwitchLinc. The new SwitchLinc added under the dummy name will be deleted. The Admin Console is closed and must be restarted.

Yes, thank you LeeG... This method seems to be the correct way to replace a defective device.

I just replaced a nonworking KPL 2486D with a new 2334-232 (dimmer) using the above method. It almost worked correctly but here is what happened.  When I moved the old switch out of the folder to the ISY level, it only had 4 (of the 5) buttons defined. Then I added the new dimmer which had 5 switch addresses. I did not change the name from it's numerical address to some dummy name (I forgot to do that step). I executed the replace old with new which seemed to work (the console closed at the end of the operation). I assumed that the 4 switches would get renamed and the 5th would still have its numerical address. I was wrong... I restarted the console and now there are only the original 4 names, the 5th switch is gone. What do I have to do in order to get the ISY to recognize the 5th switch? I tried restoring the device and writing updates to it, but no luck with those commands. thanks for any help you can provide.

Since you replaced the device with a nonidentical device I don't think it was linked correctly.  You'll probably have to delete it then re-link it properly and go thru the trouble of changing all your scenes and programs to reflect the change.

Thanks...I believe they are the same type of device (5 button dimmer KPLs) - you can't buy the old one's anymore. In any case, what is interesting is that the button which wasn't showing up in the console on the old device and now is not showing up on the console with the new device WORKS correctly - exactly as it did with the old device. So even though I can't see it in the console, it did transfer from the old switch to the new switch  correctly. 

 

So in order to delete the device and reestablish scenes and programs, is there a way to "print out" all the scenes that each switch is used in and more importantly, each program that uses each switch? Or do I have to write it all down?

Hi baabm,

 

How many devices/scenes do you have? You might have reached the limit of the number of nodes on your unit. Before you remove things, try adding a new scene. If it does not get created, then you have reached the max number of nodes and must upgrade to PRO.

Thanks - It appears that I have a little over 100 devices and scenes in total. I was easily able to create a new "test" scene with no errors. I am thinking of upgrading to PRO anyway, but at this point would probably wait until I have the current system working the way I want it to before I upgrade.

 

I just double checked the functionality of every button on the new switch and it appears to be working 100% correctly even though the "B" switch doesn't show up in the console...very strange.

I agree. Can you right mouse click on the main button and choose | Group devices. How many nodes appear underneath?

And as a matter of style, is grouping the switches of a KPL together a good way to keep track of physical switches and their underlying functional buttons?

Grouping the KPL nodes does not change the way the KPL nodes work.

 

However, Grouping the nodes together avoids losing track of one or more nodes because of how the node names are sorted in the "Network".  

 

Can you post the names on the 5 KPL nodes?

Grouping is purely cosmetic, it's independent of function.

To answer LeeG's question:

The names of the 5 KPL nodes are:

 

Kitchen KPL.All Kitchen Lights

Cove Lt KPL.Pendant Button

Kitchen KPL.Entry Button

Kitchen KPL.Home Button

Kitchen KPL. garage door button

 

And now I see why the pendant button didn't show up...it's got the wrong name. So I just changed it to Kitchen KPL.Pendant button and all is well
