jshank Posted July 14, 2014 Share Posted July 14, 2014 I have a new whole house fan (QuietCool QC-4500) that I'm trying to control using a Micro Open/Close Module (2444-422). I may have purchased the wrong module for the purpose but wanted to make sure before i send it back. The fan has two load lines, 1 for low speed and 1 for high speed. I hooked up the module properly and everything works except the fan shuts off after a few seconds. I believe this is operating as intended since a normal directional device would only run for X seconds before it's in the fully open/down position, then X seconds again to return to the closed/up position. I'd like to override this behavior and allow continuous down for low speed, continuous up for high speed and a completely off option. Is anyone familiar enough with this device to let me know if this can be done or do I need to buy a different module/set of modules to achieve this? Link to comment

You purchased the dimmer instead of the relay on /off. Please return it and buy the correct one. Also please do not use it again as the dimmer will not provide full voltage / power to the device and can cause damage to the unit. jshank Posted July 14, 2014 Author Share Posted July 14, 2014 It's definitely the right device but I'd need 4 of them to automate my whole house fan (2 fans with 2 load lines each = $200!). Due to the toggle nature and 2-load lines (high-speed and low-speed), the motor control made sense. I just need to be able to override the timed-shutoff of the circuit and figure out a way to trigger a true "off" condition. The ultimate goal would be to support all 5 states of the fan. Off/Off - No power to either module Low/Off - 1st module Line power to Load 1 (Low Speed Red Wire) : 2nd module off Low/Low - Line power to Load 1 (Low Speed Red Wire) : 2nd module Line power to Load 1 (Low Speed Red Wire) High/Low - Line power to Load 2 (High Speed Black Wire) : 2nd module Line power to Load 1 (Low Speed Red Wire) High/High - Line power to Load 2 (High Speed Black Wire) : 2nd module Line power to Load 2 (High Speed Black Wire) Link to comment

I have not looked into the user manual for this product at all. So, this might be a lot of assumption on my part. As I stated early the unit you have is intended to control devices such as window blinds / motors for a brief moment in time. I do not believe it was intended to be used for continuous use. Hence why I quoted the sales advert above. If this device is timing out I have to assume that is the way its designed. For HVAC related items I used and deployed the On/Off relay indicated above with great success. Link to comment
ELA Posted July 15, 2014 Share Posted July 15, 2014 Hi Jshank, The manual indicates you may be exceeding the ~ 4 minute timeout for a "stuck Switch" check. The 2.5 amps output is also not enough for your ~ 4amp = high speed motor. If you want all 5 possible combinations you could consider a 4 output relay device (EZIO) interfaced to three higher current relays. Link to comment
stusviews Posted July 15, 2014 Share Posted July 15, 2014 The Open/Close module is for running a reversable motor a specific amount of time before turning off power. After an unspecified period of time, the motor is reversed for the specific time. For example, lowering a movie screen (it takes x seconds), watching the movie and then rolling the screen up (for the same x seconds). That would eliminate having to "hold" the up or down buttons to accomplish that task. But, that's not what you want. What yopu do want is an On/Off module, 2443-222 which, BTW, is rated for 15A.
