ISY994i flashing red error. Bad SD? Or other?

Featured Replies

So last night I had the misfortune to come home to my ISY994i flashing its red error LED. Looking on the forum and wiki I found this could be due to a bad SD card. I apparently lost power while I was out so maybe it was related?

In any case, I started following the instructions here:

http://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=ISY-99i/ISY-26_INSTEON:Replacing/Formatting_an_SD_Card

Unfortunately, I don't get the result indicated in step 2.4. After inserting the new SD card, logging in via telnet with the default user name and password, entering 'FS', I get the following text as expected:

***WARNING***
You will lose all data/configurations.
The controller may become inoperable!
Proceed  (Y/N)

I type 'Y' and hit enter and then it just sits there. I let it sit all night. It never said 'Goodbye' as indicated in the wiki.

I tried moving on to the next step of browsing to http://universal-devices.com/99i, the page looks like it starts running java but then stops with an error:

When I click the error it says a class can't be found:

Anyone have advice for me on this? I'm not sure how to proceed other than trying more SD cards. Also, not sure if it matters but I have the ISY with the SD card accessible from the front.

Regards,
Bertram

Hi Bertram,

I am so very sorry. The issue is that with telnet, the connection is closed before you see the goodbye.

What you need to do now is:

1. Go to http://isy.universal-devices.com/994i/4.2.16/admin.jnlp

2. Login to your ISY

3. Install 4.2.16

4. Restore your backup

If you have any problems, please do not hesitate to contact our tech support (links below).

With kind regards,
Michel

No problem, Michel. You were spot on as usual! I was able to perform the steps you outlined to a T. So glad to have my ISY back up! I think I'll leave some of these SD cards handy and ready to go just in case.

Best regards,

Bertram

Hi Bertram,

My pleasure and I am so very glad you got everything back up and running. As far as SD Cards - and based on our analysis - I must say that average defect rate over a 4 year period is less than 0.001%. The majority of those defective were due to a) original defect from manufacturing B) power outage.

With kind regards,

Michel

Good to know these aren't high failure rate items. I don't lose power often, but I will never forget this experience. Thanks again, Michel.

Sincerely,

Bertram

Good to know that "b" followed by ")" produces B)

Michel;

SD and Micro SD cards are manufactured in various Class ratings. Any particular Class is best for ISY use?

I have read  the higher class modules {video recording etc.} have a faster write speed but usually the read speed suffers.

Hi Brian H,

ISY uses SPI mode which pretty much depends on the bus speed (half of bus speed) which is pretty much around class 4-6 (about 20Mbits/second). So, even if you use a class 10 SDHC, you are not going to see much improvement in performance.

I am not sure about read vs. write performance. This said, we have used only three different manufacturers using the same class:

Toshiba (Lexar): Little read speed improvement but slower write

SanDisk: Little write improvement but slower read

Transcend: Pretty much the same read/write performance (this is what we are currently using)

With kind regards,
Michel

After turned on... it shows power, RX and TX blue led ON steady... memory led OFF and RED ERROR blinking... Is it gonne? Anything that could be done?

Hi guedesluz,

Please try reseating your SD Card.

With kind regards,

Ok I'm gonna try it and see what happens...
